Lin-Manuel Miranda Fires Back At Critics Over Mary Poppins Returns Rapping

Lin-Manuel Miranda is best known for his esteemed Broadway musical hit, Hamilton, which has the American founding father rapping about his incredible though tragic life. So, when he was cast as the leading man next to Emily Blunt's Mary Poppins in the upcoming sequel, the potential addition of Miranda's hip-hop influence raised concerns in some who want to see the musical stick to its roots.

At a press conference for Mary Poppins Returns in Beverly Hills that I attended yesterday, Lin-Manuel Miranda addressed the fuss about him bringing rap to the Disney musical, with a witty reminder about how the original 1964 film had another character spitting rhymes. Here's what he said:

Everyone that was like 'wow there's rapping in Mary Poppins Returns' forgets that Bert had a 30-second rap about all the women he dated before Mary Poppins, you've all forgotten it. The Jolly Holiday is one big flirt between Mary and Bert.

It's hard to argue about the original movie, and Lin-Manuel Miranda is absolutely right. Dick Van Dyke does rap in a scene in Mary Poppins and it's pretty amazing. During the iconic live-action/animation hybrid sequence, Mary Poppins and Bert take a lovely stroll in the village and sing "Jolly Holiday", sitting down with the cute penguins for a bite. Bert then lists several women's names in the rap segment (much to Mary's frustration), before he performs that cute dance with the penguins to woo her.

For a refresher, Lin-Manuel Miranda even tweeted the scene to demonstrate his point that rapping in Mary Poppins isn't a new idea. Take a look:

While the actor will be delivering some of his signature style to Mary Poppins Returns, audiences shouldn't expect a downright Hamilton-esque performance from Lin-Manuel Miranda, just because he's in the movie. The film marks his first leading role in a film, and it's also a project he doesn't have writing credits on. Miranda has much to offer that he has yet to show audiences yet, and seeing a bit of his rapping in the movie would likely be a treat to his fans.

For Mary Poppins Returns, the music has been written and composed by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman who have written music for the ABC musical television show Smash, and recent Broadway musicals for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Hairspray. The pair follow one of the most beloved team of composers behind Disney films, the Sherman Brothers, who wrote the music for 1964's Mary Poppins. The film went on to win Best Original Song at the Oscars for "Chim Chim Cher-ee" along with for Best Score.

Ahead of the release of Mary Poppins Returns, two tracks have already been released from the movie, one of which featuring Lin-Manuel Miranda's vocals -- and in his own cockney accent too. "Trip a Little Light Fantastic" primarily shows off his vocals leaving the mystery of his rap in the sequel yet to be seen. The highly-anticipated sequel to Mary Poppins comes to theaters on December 19.







Both stars will be back for the sequel, Fifty Shades Darker, with some fans wondering if Jamie Dornan will go full frontal in this follow-up, like his co-star Dakota Johnson did in the first movie.

Tom Hanks Mr. Rogers Movie Has A Title, And Its Perfect

Tom Hanks was already the absolute perfect choice to play Fred Rogers in the upcoming biopic about the children's television host. Now, the official title for the film has been revealed and it's already giving me that warm feeling that Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood always did. The film, which previously was going under the title You Are My Friend, will be called A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

The reveal came via an official announcement from Sony Pictures. The title, of course, comes from the first line of the opening theme song of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, the television show that Fred Rogers hosted for more than 30 years. The title of the song "Won't you be my Neighbor?" wasn't really available as a title for this movie as it was already used as the title of a documentary film about Fred Rogers that debuted earlier this year.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is still a perfect title because every person who had even a passing connection to Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood growing up, and for a show that spent so long on the air, that's a lot of people, will be familiar with that opening line. The title will instantly make people remember their childhoods. Nostalgia is a powerful motivator and it might very well motivate a lot of people to see this movie.

The new movie will star Tom Hanks in the lead role as the popular TV show host and will co-star Matthew Rhys as Tom Junod, a journalist doing a profile on Rogers. The pair end up becoming friends, with Rogers' optimistic perspective eventually rubbing off on the jaded reporter.

The only thing we've seen of the new movie so far is the promotional image above which shows Tom Hanks dressed as Fred Rogers. While I wouldn't call him the spitting image of Rogers by any means, he certainly resembles the man enough for the purposes of the film. And really, who else was going to play Fred Rogers in a movie? By all accounts, Tom Hanks is actually as nice a person as he appears to be in his films, making him the perfect person to play the man who, based on what we learned in the Won't You Be My Neighbor? documentary, actually was the person he appeared to be on television.

Add to that the fact that Tom Hanks is simply one of the best actors alive today, and you have a recipe for a potentially great film about a truly great man.

Unfortunately, the only real news we've had from the set of the new movie is that a crew member actually died while filming the new movie. He fell from a balcony, though it appears he may have had a heart attack before the fall.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is set for an October 2019 release.

This Rotten Week: Predicting The House With A Clock In Its Walls, Life Itself, And Fahrenheit 11/9 Reviews

The fall season is always home to a wide variety of different releases, and this weekend offers a whole lot of options. There's tick-ticking going on behind the drywall, a love story that wants to get you weepy and a Michael Moore documentary. Get ready for The House With A Clock In Its Walls, Life Itself, and Fahrenheit 11/9.Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.

In a cinematic landscape where filmmakers want to take the horror levels to new extremes, it's nice to see a flick like The House With A Clock In Its Walls, a movie geared toward a younger crowd that also looks like it has some legit shocks. It follows a young boy named Lewis who moves into a house with his oddball uncle (Jack Black) where a clock ticks in the walls and a whole bunch of weird shit regularly goes down. It looks entertaining for sure.

Eli Roth isn't exactly known for family-friendly films. He's more of a gorey horror dude with flicks like Death Wish (17%), Knock Knock (36%), and Green Inferno (36%) among his more recent work. There aren't any early reviews posted yet for The House With A Clock In Its Walls, but I think this finishes better than the majority of his other work. Jack Black looks perfect for the role and I suspect the story carries it.

I'm all for sappy, love stories - the kind in which characters experience genuine and real moments that life throws at you. The movies that feel like you could have lived them. That being said, Life Itself isn't really the kind I'm talking about. It wants to be that movie, but looks like it misses the mark. A big tell is the over-written, never-in-a-million-years-would-anyone-actually-talk-like-this dialogue that comes through even in the trailer. I'm all for love stories,but this one looks overly sappy, and the critics seem to agree.

Life Itself is sitting at just 20% with 15 reviews posted, and the articles posted thus far find critics agreeing the movie works way too hard to get the viewer into an emotional state without ever organically getting there. They further add that Dan Fogelman is trying so hard for the pain and anguish that come with love that it ends up ringing hollow and false. It's a shame because these kinds of films (especially with this all-star cast) can really work when done well.

Michael Moore has always had a story to tell about America, and he will go to some serious extremes to get that narrative across. He's a polarizing figure and that will likely come across in the box office sales for his latest film. It's been the case throughout his career, and now we have his latest release: Fahrenheit 11/9, a documentary about the Trump administration and what Moore sees as its ills and negatives.

It should be recognized that Michael Moore's other films have been met with great critical acclaim. Documentaries like Capitalism: A Love Story (75%), Where To Invade Next (78%), Sicko (92%) and Fahrenheit 9/11 (83%) all worked to tell stories at critical junctures in America's history, picking tough subjects and driving towards truth. This one is following a similar critical path as his others and will likely finish in the same range.

It was a really bad week for the Rotten Watch last time around, with all three movies falling out of range of the prediction. The Predator (Predicted: 59% Actual: 34%) dropped in a major way over the course of the week. After coming out of the gate strong with early reviews, nearly everything that came in afterward was negative, and the score dropped mightily over the course of the week. What a bummer, because I had medium-hopes that this franchise would keep going strong.

Meanwhile, White Boy Rick (Predicted: 45% Actual: 63%) had the opposite happen. It started with its early reviews trending around the middle, and then slowly crept up over the course of the week. Critics mostly liked what they saw, and the performances of the leads helped win the day. I had it trending in the opposite direction, and took my lumps accordingly.

And finally, A Simple Favor (Predicted: 62% Actual: 82%) just came out excellent. I probably should have been a bit more bullish on this film considering the players, content and its sleek look. I tried to trend on the side of positive with my prediction, but didn't go high enough. Critics really took to the tone and intrigue, leaving it as one of the better-review wide releases that you'll see.
