Dark Phoenix Final Trailer Shows Off New, Dark Powers For Jean Grey

Breaking news: a random mutant sighting has been reported this morning, and its a pretty big one. Thats right, Fox has dropped another trailer for Dark Phoenix, and it's all about Jean Grey and her newer, darker powers. Better still, this is probably the best trailer for the latest, and probably the last X-Men film we'll see for a while. But don't take my word for it, as you can see for yourself below:

Perhaps the greatest asset this trailer for Dark Phoenix presents is the fact that we see a clear line of story for Jean's ascendence into darkness. From the shuttle rescue that she and the rest of the crew are sent to execute, straight to her confrontation with Magneto, we see some slick storytelling at work.

Of course, there are quite a bit of powers that are used to tell that story as well, and we see Jean not only absorb the alien power force that will turn her into the Phoenix, but she also deflects lightning attacks launched by Storm, and even shatters Magneto's helmet into pieces. That's some pretty damned powerful mutation at work there.

While the usual gang of young X-Men are on display (we see Storm, Nightcrawler, and Cyclops all strutting their stuff), it's Sophie Turner's Jean Grey that's definitely ruling the show here. Seeing what we've got in front of us with this final trailer, her big moments with Michael Fassbender's Magneto and even James McAvoy's Professor Xavier look to be some of the most powerful stuff in the series.

Just the scene where she confronts Magneto "threatening her" speaks volumes on the potential that this film has to close out this chapter of X-Men history in a strong, satisfying manner.

As we've also seen in Dark Phoenix trailers of (future) past, Jean Grey is indeed going through a bit of a crisis. Something so big that the mysterious Jessica Chastain is trying to spur it on, and the rest of the X-Men universe is still trying to decide how to handle. It all comes to a head in director Simon Kinberg's big summer blockbuster, as the other side of Jean we started to see in X-Men: Apocalypse's big finale is shining through in full force. And may the spirit of Stan Lee help anyone who gets in her way.

The kitchen sink is proverbially thrown in Dark Phoenix, as there looks to be quite a bit of heartache heading our way, with Jennifer Lawrences Mystique being one of the many victims we should expect in this final installment of the series revitalization that started with 2011s X-Men: First Class.

Its truly an end of an era, and it looks like Dark Phoenix is planning to close this saga out with some heavy firepower.

Dark Phoenix marks the end of the X-Men saga as we know it on June 7th. Though that shouldn't stop you from taking the 2019 release schedule and finding some super-powered and/or more grounded delights to take in at the movies!

Will Smith Found The Aladdin Genie Backlash Very Funny

Although we got our first look at Will Smiths Genie in the upcoming Aladdin remake last December, the character was rocking a normal human guise. It wasnt until the special sneak that aired in February that the character was shown in all his blue glory. Well, maybe glory isnt the right word, as this look at the live action blue Genie was met with a lot of derision online, which included various memes and Photoshop manipulations, due to the quality of the CGI,

However, rather than be bothered or hurt by this backlash against Aladdins Genie, Will Smith actually found these reactions amusing. In his words:

It was very funny. There was a Sonic The Hedgehog / Genie frog. Everything is under such critical scrutiny. I came up in an era where there was no internet. Its a new thing that Im trying to get a handle on.

Will Smith does have a point. The internet as we know it wasnt around when he was growing up, and even during the period when he was starring in hits like Bad Boys, Independence Day and Men in Black, the World Wide Web didnt hold anywhere near the cultural influence it does now. Sure you might have come across some movie criticism, but thats a far cry from someone using an Arrested Development screenshot to poke fun at the live action iteration of a Disney character only minutes after a new preview dropped.

Thing seem to have calmed down on the Genie front since then, particularly after a new Aladdin trailer dropped last month which included improved shots of Will Smiths character. Director Guy Ritchie, who also spoke with Empire, noticed the turnaround on the reception towards Genie, saying:

It even came with apologies from the cynics who were so adamant initially. Ive never seen apologies in that world. I thought, Oh well, great, were back to where Id hoped wed be.'

Altogether, weve only glimpsed seconds of Genie from the Aladdin marketing, so well have to wait until the movie actually comes out to see whether the VFX crew stuck the proverbial landing with his blue appearance or if there are still some noticeable issues. Either way, at least Will Smith was able to get a little joy out of the mockery his version of Genie went through rather than take it personally.

Rather than radically overhauling the story of its 1992 animated predecessor, Aladdin seems to be following in the footsteps of Beauty and the Beast and going the straightforward remake route, though obviously still with some differences. Along with Will Smith, the main cast includes Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Jasmine, Marwan Kenzari as Jafar, Navid Negahban as The Sultan, Nasim Pedrad as Dalia, Billy Magnussen as Prince Anders, Numan Acar as Hakim and Robby Haynes as Razoul, as well as Alan Tudyk voicing Iago and Frank Welker reprising Abu the monkey and the Cave of Wonders.

It's an exciting time to be a Star Wars fan. With Disney now in charge of the property, there is a ton of content being produced, greatly expanding the galaxy far, far away in the process. Between the current trilogy, standalone films, and Rian Johnson's mysterious new trilogy, we should expect plenty of Star Wars blockbusters in the coming years. As such, the House of Mouse needs to hire some A-list directors to work on the upcoming films. With Ava DuVernay making history with her work on Disney's A Wrinkle in Time, she seemed like a great choice to helm an upcoming galactic adventure. Unfortunately, she doesn't seem very interested, recently tweeting out,

Well, that tweet certainly puts an end to all the speculation. It doesn't seem like Ava DuVernay has an interest in traveling across the galaxies in an epic space opera. And while she might be a great choice to bring some much needed diversity to the franchise, it's just not the right project for the Selma director.

With so many Star Wars projects being developed by Disney, there is an opportunity to hire some truly fantastic talent both behind and in front of the camera. Due to the property's massive appeal and reach, many have been calling for more inclusion in Star Wars flicks. The first two trilogies were obviously all directed by the visionary George Lucas, but now the iconic characters and settings can now be explored through new eyes. Thus far those have all been exclusively white men, leading to a conversation around proper inclusion and diversity within the Star Wars universe.

Ava DuVernay has already proven herself as a groundbreaker in the world of film production. Her successes have almost all been firsts for the industry. It all seemed to start with her Sundance win for 2012's Middle of Nowhere, where she was the first African-American woman to win. With Selma she became the first black woman to get nominated for both the Golden Globe and Oscar for directing. A Wrinkle in Time marks the biggest budget movie directed by a black woman, continuing her streak of breaking down barriers with her work. It's likely because of this inspiring narrative that DuVernay has been at the top of some cinephiles' lists to helm a Star Wars movie.

All eyes are currently on Ava DuVernay, a her highly anticipated adaptation of A Winkle in Time arrives in theaters. Reviews have been mixed thus far, but it still has the potential to make a ton of money at the box office. It's currently unclear exactly what DuVernay will work on next, but it's certainly not going to be a Star Wars movie.
