The Confusing Ready Player One Riddle, And What It Actually Means

The following contains spoilers for Ready Player One, both the film and the novel it's based on.

Ready Player One is all about solving puzzles in order to win a video game contest. However, one of those puzzles isn't given much attention, which is too bad, because it's really fun to solve. The vast majority of the film's runtime is given over to solving the riddle of the Jade Key. After the Jade Key is discovered, the movie barely stops moving long enough to let the audience know what the riddle is that leads to the Crystal Key, before revealing the answer and moving on. You'd be forgiven for not even being able to remember what the riddle was, since it gets basically ignored. The film also never clearly explains how the solution was found. So let's do that, shall we?

After Art3mis locates the Jade Key inside a particular classic horror movie which I'm not going to spoil, we get a brief scene in the real world of Samantha and Wade trying to solve the new clue she was given. The clue reveals that if you take the "Number Ultimate" and divide it by the "Number Magic," you will find the location of the "Fortress Tragic." However, before the pair are able to begin trying to decode the riddle in any meaningful way, IOI breaks into the building and all hell breaks loose. Samantha helps Wade escape before she gets captured by IOI.

In the next scene, we see Wade meet up with the real world people behind his friends Aech, Diato, and Sho where he's informed that IOI has already solved the riddle. Helen (Aech) tells him that IOI knew they needed to look in sector 14, and eventually discovered the key's location by searching every fortress in the sector. So we know the answer is 14, but here's how you come up with it.

Let's start with the "Number Ultimate." This may be the easiest part of the riddle to decipher, as the ultimate number is pretty famous, even if you're not directly familiar with the source material that created it. That would be The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The work by Douglas Adams began life as a radio production, though likely became the most famous in book form, published in 1979. It tells the story of Arthur Dent, one of the last human beings in the universe after the planet is destroyed to make way for a hyperspace bypass. Dent learns that the Earth was actually a massive computer built to help discover the ultimate question to life, the universe, and everything. The reason the question was being investigated was that the answer had already been learned. The answer to life, the universe, and everything, it turned out, was 42. Now, the Number Magic is probably a bit harder for many people, although, if you've read the Ready Player One book you know the answer already, as this number is the one part of the hunt for the egg that actually survives the book and makes it into the movie, though the way it's used in the book is quite different. The other people who will know the answer are those who grew up watching Schoolhouse Rock on TV, because they know that "Three is a Magic Number."

So we take the Number Ultimate (42) and divide by the Number Magic (3) to get the answer of 14. By going into Sector 14 of the OASIS you can find Castle Anorak, the fortress which is tragic because James Halliday felt more at home there than in the real world.

So that's the solution to locating the Crystal Key. It's not surprising that IOI solved it so quickly, it's not that complicated, but it is fun, which makes it unfortunate that Ready Player One couldn't find the time to have the explanation make it to the screen.

2016's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them concluded with a true shocker to audiences when it revealed Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald. He is one of the most powerful Dark Wizards mentioned in J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World, only outshined by Lord Voldemort. In the upcoming sequel Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald, just as the title indicates, Depp as the Dark Wizard will have a much more central role in the film. This time Grindelwald has a slightly different look; a scary-looking eye countering his brown eye, a deliberate choice from Depp himself. Here's why he has it, per Depp:

It's a character choice. I saw Grindelwald as more than one, if you know what I mean. I almost felt like he's maybe two people. He's twins in one body. So a gamey eye is more like the other side of him. Sort of like a brain for each eye, an albino twin, and he's somewhere in the middle.

Per his interview with Entertainment Weekly, it looks like Johnny Depp has taken his role as Grindelwald quite acutely with this character detail. In Crimes of Grindelwald, Depp is taking on the role of a new villain for one of fantasy's most beloved universes. This character attribute will likely be more apparent when we see his character return in the new Fantastic Beasts film. So farm we know that Grindelwald will pose quite the threat, with his vile agenda to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all Muggles. A younger Dumbledore will recruit his previous pupil, Newt Scamander, to help take Grindelwald down.

Johnny Depp is perhaps best known for his unique ability to add his own spin on his characters, often unexpected and original. One big example of this for mainstream audiences was his role as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. While Depp has noted that Disney wasn't initially sold on his bold and drunken performance as the pirate, following the success of the Curse of the Black Pearl, the actor must have gained the studio's trust. After starring in quite a few successful franchises, writer J.K. Rowling and director David Yates also put their unwavering trust in Depp to add his own signature to Grindelwald.

In the interview, Johnny Depp described Grindelwald as childlike, dangerous and an oddly likable character. Perhaps his two extreme halves symbolized in his eyes will be apparent in this way to audiences as we struggle to dislike his character, while also finding ourselves intrigued with him as well. Considering the recent allegations against Johnny Depp, which the actor recently opened up about, there is somewhat of a parallel here. Many fans of Johnny Depp and the franchise have found themselves at war with his casting after being accused for violent behavior, but at the same time are excited for the character actor's appearance as well.

Zack Snyder Has Clarified What His Robin Plans Were For Batman V Superman

In the two years since its release, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is still generating a lot of conversation among fans, and Zack Snyder has helped with that in recent months. The director has been taking to his Vero account to talk with fans about his time in the DC Extended Universe, including calling into question the identity of the dead Robin. Jason Todd is the one who is killed by The Joker in the comics, but recently Snyder revealed that as he saw it, Dick Grayson was the one who died. Snyder let his followers know about this by simply writing:

This revelation came after a fan posted about a Suicide Squad deleted scene where Batman, having just captured Harley Quinn, says, "Joker took something important from me, now I'm gonna take something from him." The fan wondered if Batman was referring to Jason Todd, but Zack Snyder later responded that (at least in his mind), it's Richard Grayson, a.k.a. the first Robin, who was taken away from Bruce Wayne, not Jason Todd, the second Robin. It's worth noting this isn't the first time this twist has been brought up, as during Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's shoot, a gravestone was spotted that read 'Richard John Grayson." However, it remained uncertain whether this was a legit story element or was just a prop thrown onto the set as a joke. Of course, given that a Nightwing movie is in development, that means that if that project goes forward, Dick needs to stay alive. So I suspect that as far as the Warner Bros and DC brass are concerned, Dick is still out fighting crime and Jason is the one buried six feet under.

But Zack Snyder wasn't done with the Robin talk on Vero. Later on, when another fan asked if there was a plan to bring Dick back to life or would he just have stayed dead, the director responded:

Longtime DC Comics fans know that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was heavily influenced by The Dark Knight Returns, particularly by showing the eponymous heroes coming to blows. While the rumors claiming that Jena Malone was playing Carrie Kelley, the new Robin introduced in The Dark Knight Returns, proved to be false (Malone actually played Jenet Klyburn in the Ultimate Edition), now we know that Zack Snyder did plan on pairing Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne at some point in the future. No doubt this was part of Snyder's original five movie plan, but given the new direction the DCEU is now going in, as well as Snyder not expected to helm another DC film, who knows if we'll ever see Carrie in a live action theatrical setting.

We Saw The First 22 Minutes Of Incredibles 2, Heres What Happens

To truly appreciate the opening of Brad Bird's anticipated sequel, Incredibles 2, you are going to want to revisit the last few minutes of The Incredibles. And seeing how it's been nearly 14 years since Pixar released that original superhero adventure comedy, take a moment and rewatch the ending of the first movie before you read on. I've even included it below for you!

Also, naturally, this article will contain spoilers for June's release, Incredibles 2, so if you really don't want to know what we learned, stop reading!

A few weeks back, CinemaBlend was invited to Pixar Animation's campus in Emeryville, California to learn more about Brad Bird's Incredibles 2. This included interviews with Bird and so many members of his amazing animation team. And in the process, we watched the opening 22 minutes of the sequel. Here's what happened!

The sequel opens on shadowy agent Rick Decker (voiced, this time out, but Better Call Saul standout Jonathan Banks). Decker is interviewing teenage Tony, the boy who might have a crush on Violet Parr (Sarah Vowell). And he's asking him what happened in the parking lot, the moment the Underminer (John Ratzenberger) emerged from the ground.

That's right, Incredibles 2 begins moments after The Incredibles, when this scene ended:

We asked Brad Bird why he chose to pick up the action on the sequel right after the ending of the original film, and he admitted:

I thought about aging everybody, the way everybody does, and then I thought, 'No, that sucks.' [Laughs] So, that's about as deep as it went.

What happens next? The opening of Incredibles 2 is a full-scale battle between the family and The Underminer that goes below and through the massive city, passing Jack-Jack from family member to family member as they go. The Underminer is trying to rob a bank using a giant vacuum tube, only he ends up vacuuming up Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) in the process. As the villain plots his escape, he pilots the large-scale drill that he drove at the end of The Incredibles... causing all sorts of damage. The battle involves all four members of the Parr family, and even Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson), who uses his powers to create an ice bridge to catch a monorail.

We see a few moments of this sequence in the most recent Incredibles 2 trailer.

Following the battle, the Incredibles are back to being persona non grata. The city is upset that Supers created so much damage, so Rick Decker has to visit the Parrs -- who are staying at a motel, since their house was destroyed at the end of the first movie -- and tell them that he's discontinuing the Supers program. Luckily, right at that time, Frozone comes by with an offer.

The superhero has been approached by sibling entrepreneurs Winston (Bob Odenkirk) and Evelyn Deavor (Catherine Keener). They seek to repair the image of the Supers, and eliminate the law that makes Supers illegal. Their plan involves placing body cams on the suits worn by the Supers -- this is why Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) has a new costume in later footage. And for their first mission, they want to send Elastigirl out into the field.

There ends the bulk of the opening footage that we watched at Pixar. Some of this is teased in the new trailer. The rest will be revealed when Brad Bird's Incredibles 2 opens in theaters on June 15.
