Black Panther Becomes First Movie In 35 Years To Play In Saudi Arabia

We're almost two months removed from the release of Black Panther, a film that has broken records and made history to a degree no one could have predicted. But even as Ryan Coogler's film winds down its long theatrical run, it still has some more history to make. The Middle Eastern country of Saudi Arabia will open its first public cinema in decades on April 18th, and it is expected that Marvel's Black Panther will be the first film shown.

This news comes after AMC scored the first cinema license from the Saudi Ministry of Culture after a 35-year ban on cinemas was lifted in December. The deal AMC struck will see the world's largest theater chain open around 40 cinemas in 15 cities in the country over the next five years. The first of those AMC theaters opens in the Saudi Arabian capital city of Riyadh on April 18th, with Black Panther expected to be the debut feature. According to BBC News, Saudi officials and cinema operators believe that the new market could see up to $1 billion in annual ticket sales across 350 theaters by 2030. So while this is just one theater for now, Black Panther will continue to add to its foreign box office total with an excited new market yearning for Western content. For Black Panther, a film that has already meant so much to so many people, this is just another cool distinction it can add to the history books.

The people of Saudi Arabia are fans of Western media and culture, but such things have had to be enjoyed privately at home until now. The country had cinemas in the 1970s, but they were closed due to pressure from Islamic clerics. The country practices a strict form of Sunni Islam and there are still those in the religious community who are against the influence of movies. It is likely that movies will be censored to cater to the values of the country's religion; however, unlike most public venues, the cinemas will not be segregated by gender, a huge change for the country that will also begin allowing women to drive in June of this year.

These changes are largely attributed to new Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman who has called for a more moderate Islam. This is also part of the country's Vision 2030 economic overhaul that will see the country attempting to diversify its economy and reduce its reliance on oil. Due to the restrictions in the country, Saudis with means have had to travel abroad in the past for their entertainment. Now with theaters and entertainment options opening up within the country, money from ticket sales to movies like Black Panther goes back into the Saudi Arabian economy. While nowhere near the size of a market like China, Saudi Arabia is a very young country that craves Western entertainment and its contribution to the international box office should only grow in the coming years.

As for Black Panther, after becoming the highest-grossing superhero movie of all time domestically, it is still hanging out at the top five in the box office. Luckily for audiences around the world, we won't have to wait long to see T'Challa, Shuri and all our favorite Wakandans back on screen because Avengers: Infinity War arrives in theaters on April 27th.

Neil Armstrongs Sons Respond To Flag Planting Controversy

Damien Chazelle's First Man recently screened for audiences and earned solid reviews, but the film has not debuted without some early controversy. Specifically, some have taken issue with the fact that the movie doesn't include the moment in which Neil Armstrong (played by Drive actor Ryan Gosling in the film) planted an American flag on the surface of the moon. In the face of accusations that the film is "anti-American," Armstrong's sons Rick and Mark have issued a statement explaining that the movie is about the lesser-known elements of their father's life, and therefore doesn't include something so iconic. The statement says:

We've read a number of comments about the film today and specifically about the absence of the flag planting scene, made largely by people who haven't seen the movie. As we've seen it multiple times, we thought maybe we should weigh in. This is a film that focuses on what you don't know about Neil Armstrong. It's a film that focuses on things you didn't see or may not remember about Neil's journey to the moon. The filmmakers spent years doing extensive research to get at the man behind the myth, to get at the story behind the story. It's a movie that gives you unique insight into the Armstrong family and fallen American Heroes like Elliot See and Ed White. It's a very personal movie about our dad's journey, seen through his eyes.

This complaint popped up online a few days ago when early screenings of First Man revealed that the American flag does not factor into the moonwalk scene of the movie. Many who heard about this (most of whom have not actually seen the movie) then took to the internet to complain about the omission, arguing on the grounds that it devalues Neil Armstrong's status as an American hero. However, Mark and Rick Armstrong want to put that notion to rest, explaining that their father didn't see himself as an American hero in the first place.

With all of that said, the short-winded version of the story is that Neil Armstrong's sons simply want folks to check out the movie before making these "anti-American" assumptions for themselves. The sons continued in their statement released by EW and said:

In short, we do not feel this movie is anti-American in the slightest. Quite the opposite. But don't take our word for it. We'd encourage everyone to go see this remarkable film and see for themselves

Audiences will get to see what Damien Chazelle and Ryan Gosling have done with the life of Neil Armstrong later this year when First Man debuts on October 12. Watch out for the film when it premieres, and head over to our movie premiere guide to read up on all of the other films that are set to premiere on the big screen in 2018!

Ray Park Kept Telling People He Was Returning As Darth Maul, And No One Noticed

The biggest surprise to come out of Solo: A Star Wars Story was the reveal that Darth Maul was the secret bad guy behind the Crimson Dawn crime organization. While Maul has been back for a while thanks to Star Wars cartoons, this was his first live action appearance since 1998. Ray Park, the actor who physically plays Maul in The Phantom Menace, was brought back for Solo, and while these types of cameos are usually shrouded in secrecy, Park was pretty into teasing it on social media ahead of his ultimate appearance. However, as it turns out, no one really noticed at the time. Check out one post he made teasing his Star Wars appearance.

Ray Park is an actor and martial artist perhaps best known for his role as Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Park was able to design his choreography for the role, contributing to what most Star Wars fans consider to be one of the best lightsaber fights in the franchise. Though only had a few lines in the movie, he was dubbed over by Peter Serafinowicz in the film, and later when Maul made his big return in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Sam Witwer provided the voice. Witwer once again did the voice for Maul in Solo, with Park reprising his role on set.

It had been quite a few years since Ray Park had to get his face painted, so one can imagine he was excited to be playing the character again. He was so excited that if people were paying attention to his social media feed, they probably would have gotten some big hints. One clue was that he shaved his head and Park had posted to his Instagram page writing, "Now... I wonder why I shaved my hair a wee while ago?"

This post came out a little while after Solo when the cat was already out of the bag, but apparently, he had deleted a few previous posts where he had secretly provided hints to his comeback, according to Forbes.

I may have deleted a bunch, but if you go back and check all my Instagram posts, I was secretly telling everyone, but no-one knew.

If Darth Maul ever shows up again, people better pay attention to Ray Park's social media! Still, it's unclear if there is a plan for Maul to appear in a movie again. One would assume that a sequel to Solo would be the best place for Maul to appear, but it's unknown if Disney and Lucasfilm will greenlight such a movie after Solo underperformed at the box office.

It might not have Maul in it, but the next Star Wars film to hit theaters will be Star Wars: Episode IX, which doesn't arrive until December 19, 2019. To learn more about the movie, here's everything we know so far.

The Types Of Movies Star Wars Should Make Moving Forward

The Types Of Movies Star Wars Should Make Moving Forward

If there's one thing that can be said about the Star Wars franchise right now, it's that it's not lacking for content, especially in the movie realm. Once we were thankful for each installment of a new Star Wars trilogy to arrive three years after the previous one, but now Disney and Lucasfilm are ensuring that we won't be without at least one Star Wars movies per year for the foreseeable future. The Last Jedi came out two months ago, Solo: A Star Wars Story is three months away, Episode IX has been pushed back to December 2019 and another standalone movie is scheduled for 2020. The fun doesn't stop there, though, as Lucasfilm has already announced two separate Star Wars movie series are on the way. So clearly there won't be any shortage of Star Wars movies anytime soon, but it's still worth asking the question of what type of theatrical Star Wars tales should be made as we enter this new era. In the eyes of this writer, ones that stand out from main saga entries that we've received over the last four decades.

At the moment, the Star Wars movie series follows a simple pattern. Release one of the "main" movies one year, release a standalone "story" the year after, rinse and repeat. That pattern might start to change once these new Star Wars series start coming out, the first of which was announced last November, a month before The Last Jedi hit theaters. Lucasfilm was so pleased with director/writer Rian Johnson's work that it gave him his own trilogy to oversee, one that will be separate from the Skywalker saga and take place in a corner of a galaxy far, far away that hasn't been explored before. Then last week came the surprise news that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will produce separate Star Wars movies that are also unconnected to the Skywalker saga. So now we find ourselves in a position where two separate series of movies could be running at the same time, a first for this franchise. Because we've spent so much time with the Skywalkers and those closest to them, it will be nice to branch off into new territory.

What these new movies mean for the standalone Star Wars movies after 2020 is unclear. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Boba Fett, Yoda and Jabba the Hutt have been rumored or suggested for being the subjects for these self-contained cinematic stories, and while one of them may be selected to headline the 2020 Star Wars movie (Obi-Wan seems to be the likeliest candidate), it's possible that for the new decade, Lucasfilm might set aside these particular projects. Right now, our only frame for how these have performed is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which was critically and commercially successful. It's a good start, though Solo: A Star Wars Story will show us whether or that success can be maintained. But even if these Star Wars stories continue to perform well, with two "main" series on the way, perhaps it might be too much keeping the one-and-done movies going, and that's even if we ignore if Disney and Lucasfilm might decide to start releasing two Star Wars movies per year.

Arguably the most important thing that Lucasfilm needs to do with the new Star Wars movies is expand this unique galaxy as much as possible, and I don't just mean exploring new planets and introducing new alien species. All the movies so far have either been directly connected to either the rise and fall of the Empire or the conflict with The First Order. Solo: A Star Wars Story could be looked at as an exception, though there will be an Imperial presence in the movie. In any case, it's smart for Lucasfilm to start branching away from this approach through the Rian Johnson and David Benioff/D.B. Weiss movies. Meeting new characters engaged in different kinds of adventures will be most refreshing.

That being said, Star Wars should not be trying to craft a tight-knit cinematic universe akin to what Marvel has created. While many of the MCU movies of the last 10 years can be enjoyed on their own, there's no question that each has been a little piece of a puzzle that's been slowly assembling and will culminate in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4. The world of Star Wars doesn't need to be so closely connected. Just because there are special events happening in one corner doesn't mean they have to be related in any way whatsoever to events happening in another corner. For all we know, Rian Johnson might be venturing into the Unknown Territories for his movies, while David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will travel to the Old Republic era for theirs. That's just an example, but the point is that the franchise is in no way obligated to maintain specific connective threads in a galaxy this large.

Which brings us back to the standalone Star Wars movies. On the one hand, keeping these types of movies around could be a good way to keep a foot in the door of Star Wars past by re-visiting fan favorite characters, providing different perspectives on events we've already seen, etc. On the other hand, with all the TV shows, books, comic books and video games that also comprise the Star Wars media empire, how necessary are these "stories" in the grand scheme of things. It's been an interesting experiment, to be sure, but if Lucasfilm wants to continue venturing down this path, there are other ways to do that for the more hardcore Star Wars fans. These newly-announced movies are a step in the right direction for helping the franchise evolve, so I can't help but suspect that when the 2020s come around, these standalone stories will become a thing of the past. We'll have to wait and see.
