The Lady And The Tramp Remake Has Cast Its First Stars

It's no secret that in recent years Disney has been digging deep into its library of pre-2000 animated movies and selected a number of them to be adapted for live action, such as Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast. Most of these are being released traditionally in theaters, but the upcoming Disney streaming service is getting in on the action as well. It was announced earlier this year that the platform will be home to a live action remake of 1955's Lady and the Tramp, and now it's being reported that Extras' Ashley Jensen and The Leftovers' Justin Theroux are the first actors boarding the project.

First, Deadline dropped the news that Ashley Jensen, whose credits also include Catastrophe and Sherlock Gnomes, will voice a Scottish terrier named Jackie, who is a gender-swapped version of Jock from the original Lady and the Tramp. Jackie is described as a "loyal supporter" to Lady. Then Collider reported that Justin Theroux, who made a brief appearance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and will be seen next month in The Spy Who Dumped Me, is in final negotiations to voice the eponymous Tramp. The search is still underway to find the actress to voice Lady, but casting so far is off to a solid start.

The original Lady and the Tramp movie followed Lady, a female American cocker spaniel who lived with an upper-class family, and Tramp, a male stray mongrel, meeting and falling in love. That basic premise is obviously being kept intact for the live action/CGI remake, but otherwise no specific plot details have been revealed yet, including if it will be set in the early 1900s or be moved to the present day, and more importantly, whether or not we'll see a recreation of the famous spaghetti kiss scene. Nevertheless, Lady and the Tramp is one of Disney's classic movies, and while it might not have necessarily been a financial hit had it been thrown into theaters, including it as on the Disney streaming service ideally will be a good way to entice people into signing up. With two actors on board, we can presumably look forward to more actors being announced for the new Lady and the Tramp soon, whether they're voicing one of the animals or playing one of the humans.

The Lady and the Tramp remake doesn't have a release date yet, but production could begin later this year, and the Disney streaming service itself is expected to launch in late 2019. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for continuing coverage, and if you're curious about what's arriving in theaters later this year, check out our 2018 release schedule. You're also welcome to look through our handy guide detailing what other projects are in the works for the Disney streaming service.

What It Was Like Filming Outlaw Kings Muddy, Bloody Battle Sequences

What It Was Like Filming Outlaw Kings Muddy, Bloody Battle Sequences

We've seen many different kinds of war movies set throughout all eras of society, but few get as sincerely chaotic as David Mackenzie's upcoming Outlaw King. Not only is it a film featuring the execution of guerilla tactics, but the cinematography is specifically designed to highlight the insanity that is battle. It's a standout element of production, and something I got to talk about with the director and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chris Pine:

Last month I joined members of the press flying out to Edinburgh, Scotland, where I sat down with the Outlaw King director and cast to talk about the new movie. It was in both my interviews with David Mackenzie and Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chris Pine that the subject of the chaotic battle scenes came up, and they explained how it was all brought to life.

Speaking from the actors perspective, Aaron Taylor-Johnson admitted that it was a taxing experience to create the mayhem-filled sequences of Outlaw King -- which includes a fire-filled midnight ambush, and a fight set in what's basically a giant mud pit. Tough as it was, though, it was all part of the director's vision, and that's what they signed up for. Said Taylor-Johnson,

No, it was pretty chaotic, and relentless, and grueling. And I think that's again, Mackenzie's way of filmmaking. He likes to capture that essence, and therefore creates that kind of environment where it is authentic and real and chaotic.

When I spoke with David Mackenzie later in the day, he confirmed that his personal filmmaking style isn't one that is all about structure. While making the battle sequences he had multiple cameras running, and apparently never explicitly explained to his performers what was being captured -- instead letting them just exist in the atmosphere:

Well, as the director, I like things to be very loose. I liked my actors to improvise a bit. I like to, you know, not have a very big difference between when we're on and when we're off, not really to know, and for everyone to inhabit the reality of the environment in particular location.

Outlaw King is the second collaboration between David Mackenzie and Chris Pine after their work on the Oscar-nominated Hell Or High Water. This time around Pine is playing Robert The Bruce, a noble Earl who picked up the revolutionary torch left by William Wallace in 14th century Scotland. In the name of freedom, and not wanting to live under the boot heel of England's King Edward I (Stephen Dillane), Robert led his small resistance group (including Aaron Taylor-Johnson's James Douglas, Lord of Douglas) in a battle against tyranny, waging a bloody war and being declared by his followers as the Outlaw King.

The film makes you feel like you are on the battlefield right alongside Robert The Bruce and his men, and a great deal of credit goes to the cinematographer -- who has some experience with capturing reality. As Aaron Taylor Johnson explained, it was shot by Barry Ackroyd, who not only has a background in documentaries, but also visceral thrillers like The Hurt Locker and United 93.

Barry Ackroyd shot this, and his whole background is documentary filmmaking. So it felt like we were a pack of wild animals, and it was capture what you can and there were moments of realism.

As David Mackenzie explained, there was simultaneously every effort made to make sure the set of Outlaw King was as safe as possible, including not only the stunt work, but also all of the performing with the horses. At the same time though, if you watch the film and feel like you're watching madness unfold, then that means Mackenzie accomplished his mission.

Following its premiere earlier this fall at the Toronto International Film Festival, Outlaw King will soon be arriving for consumption -- but it won't be at your local cineplex. Instead, Netflix subscribers will find it available to stream this Friday, November 9th. Give it a watch when it lands, and be on the lookout here on CinemaBlend for more from my interviews with David Mackenzie and the movie's cast.

An entire film could've been made from the perspective of Robert's wife and the villains, and it probably would've been more more entertaining than Outlaw King. With a budget of $120 million dollars, Outlaw King is perhaps the best looking Netflix film to date. It begins with a bravura-eight minute long take. During the scene, we see Robert pledging loyalty to Edward I, dueling by sword with the king's snivelling, psychotic son Edward II (Billy Howle) and witnessing a castle being destroyed via catapult.

Forrest Gump Was Originally Getting A Sequel, And It Sounds Wild

Forrest Gump was the rare film that succeeded at the box office while also being a major award winner. With something like that, you can practically hear the studio green-lighting the sequel, but one never happened. However, it turns out a sequel actually came quite close to happening. Eric Roth, who won an Oscar for his screenplay of the original Forrest Gump, actually completed work on a script for a sequel. Unfortunately, the new script had just about the worst possible timing. According to Roth...

Literally, I turned it in the day before 9/11. Tom and I and (director Robert Zemeckis) got together on 9/11 to sort of commiserate about how life was in America and how tragic it was. And we looked at each other and said, This movie has no meaning anymore,' in that sense.

Forrest Gump was a movie that was built entirely out of optimism. The main character almost always had a positive outlook and attitude that carried him through life. On 9/11, you can bet that few people were feeling such optimism. Clearly, the team behind the first film looked at this new sequel and just figured the world they were now in was not a place where a Forrest Gump 2 made any sense.

Of course, even if things had gone differently, one has to wonder just how well a sequel to Forrest Gump would have actually worked, because this story was weird. The first film was all about watching Forrest Gump coincidentally find himself part of major historical events, and the sequel would have continued that idea, while moving the story closer to the modern day. This included, as Roth tells Yahoo, somehow making Gump part of the O.J. Simpson murder case.

I had (Forrest) in the back of (O.J. Simpson's) Bronco. He would look up occasionally, but they didnt see him in the rearview mirror, and then hed pop down.

Needless to say, putting Forrest Gump in O.J.'s famous white bronco is an...interesting choice. It was certainly a moment that everybody watching the film would remember, but not exactly in the best way. It's not quite the same as watching him report the Watergate break-in.

Forest Gump also had a tendency to have certain skills that made him incredibly good at various activities. In the original movie it was football and table tennis. In the sequel, we would learn that Forrest Gump was an excellent ballroom dancer, a skill which would apparently result in him dancing with Princess Diana at one point.

Forrest would also begin a new relationship in the sequel, with a Native American woman. This would lead to what actually may have been one of the major reasons the script died. It included a sequence that would likely have been viewed very poorly as a post-9/11 movie.

The big event in that, which you could see was only diminished in tragedy, I guess, because it's the same tragedy. Every day he'd go wait for his native American partner. She taught nursery school at, sort of a government building in Oklahoma City. And he was sitting on the bench waiting for her to have lunch, and all of the sudden the building behind him blows up.

Somehow, I feel like the decision to not make a sequel to Forrest Gump was probably the right one, regardless of the reasons why it didn't happen. While enough time may have passed now for moments like these to have a similar impact to the original movie, back in the early 2000's these sorts of things would have been too fresh in our minds. It feels a lot less like the pleasant nostalgia of the first movie a lot more like making references for their own sake.

What do you think of these ideas for a Forrest Gump sequel? Let us know in the poll below
