One Great Thing About Releasing On Netflix Instead Of In Theaters, According To Duncan Jones

Netflix has made sweeping changes to the theatrical-distribution model that catered to the film industry for decades. Because the streaming service has access to a substantial, built-in audience, Paramount can sell them a Cloverfield sequel AND make it available almost instantaneously, as The Cloverfield Paradox did for viewers on Super Bowl Sunday. Similarly, the benefits of the Netflix model are creating new advantages for filmmakers, as Mute director Duncan Jones recently revealed to CinemaBlend that he no longer has the stress of opening-weekend expectations, because he's not going theatrical. On the eve of the release of Mute, Duncan Jones explains:

The weird thing about doing the Netflix film, obviously is it's not really about opening nights or opening weekend numbers. It's really about, 'Have I made a film that good word of mouth is going to help?' That's kind of where I'm at right now. And it's a very different feeling because that opening weekend sort of stress is not really... it doesn't really exist in the same way for this.

Duncan Jones was opening up about his sci-fi thriller Mute, which opens on Netflix on February 23. That day, the original film -- which has a loose tie to Jones' previous sci-fi drama Moon -- will be available to all Netflix subscribers in the U.S.

I was asking Jones what he used to do on opening weekend to keep himself busy when he had a new movie reaching theaters. In talking about his process, Duncan Jones also realized that dropping a film right on Netflix means that the marketing needs of a theatrical release don't factor in, so a movie's secrets can be protected until the movie is viewed. He elaborates:

I think there is something kind of cool about there being movies now that you may not know about. That someone will tell you about and you'd be, 'I never heard of that. I didn't know about that movie.' Because we're so used to being absolutely beaten over the head with marketing in the weeks running up to a theatrical opening. That's kind of how the studios do it now, because they need the opening weekends to be massive and they're making movies for four quadrants. And that's kind of what they do now. With Netflix, and this different approach of actually curating movies for more specific audiences, it's kind of this whole new approach to it now.

Mute has plenty of secrets to reveal, once the audience is able to see it. In the movie, set in a sci-fi future, a mute bartender (Alexander Skarsgard) gets involved with two seedy criminals (Paul Rudd, Justin Theroux) when his girlfriend goes missing. It's a movie Duncan Jones has been trying to make for 16 years, and he tells us that without the freedom of the Netflix model, he'd never be able to deliver Mute in the version that he prefers. Jones says:

Fundamentally the script itself would be... there would be a lot of changes. There would be a lot of pressure to change what Mute is in order to make it more obviously accessible. Accessibility I think, is the sand paper of movie making. It will take the edges off of just about anything.

Jada Pinkett Smith Dropped A Matrix Throwback Set Photo And Jaden Smith Looks So Young

It's pretty crazy to think that it has been 15 years since the sequels to the seminal sci-fi film The Matrix first dropped. The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions both came out way back in 2003 and expanded out the mythology of the franchise as well as the cast, adding new faces like Jada Pinkett Smith's Niobe. In keeping with movie stars having better throwback Thursday photos than the rest of us, Jada Pinkett Smith shared an image from the set of The Matrix sequels, including a look at a very young Jaden Smith getting to hang out with his mom at work. Check it out.

If knowing that The Matrix sequels were 15 years old didn't make you feel old, seeing a young Jaden Smith here will certainly do it. The future Karate Kid, musician and sayer of strange things looks super young in this photo, and since The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions were filmed back to back from 2001 to 2002, he was probably only between like three or four in this picture. As Jada Pinkett Smith mentions in her Instagram post, her son will be turning 20 in July.

This is a fun picture too because we see a young Jaden Smith sitting still and quiet, a difficult feat for any kid, while he gets to watch his mom be a no-nonsense character in a huge action sci-fi movie, probably looking and acting much different than he is used to seeing her at home. One of the benefits to having an actor as a parent is that sometimes you get to visit the sets of huge blockbuster movies, and Jaden Smith's parents have certainly been in their fair share of them. I like that Jada Pinkett Smith is fully decked out in Niobe attire here, looking cool and badass, but with a smile on her face as young Jaden gets to watch her do her thing.

The Matrix may seem like such a long time ago (because it is), but what's old may become new again soon. As with just about everything that was once popular these days, The Matrix franchise looks like it will be returning in some fashion. There has been talk of this for a little bit and we still know very little, but we do know that Ready Player One screenwriter Zak Penn is working on a new Matrix movie. What form that will take is unclear since we've heard about everything from a young Morpheus movie, to a reboot that's not a reboot, to Michael B. Jordan starring and more. The possibilities are seemingly wide open at this point. Maybe we'll even get to see Niobe again, and since Jaden Smith is an actor now too, who knows, maybe he could be in front of the camera this time.

In the post-credits scene to Avengers: Infinity War, Captain Marvel was basically teased as the potential savior of Earth's Mightiest Heroes and the countless citizens of the universe who fell when Thanos snapped his fingers. So needless to say, expectations are high that when Captain Marvel makes her debut next March, she will be the hero the MCU needs. Before then, actress Brie Larson is working hard to live up to the role, putting in the gym time necessary to be the Captain Marvel we deserve. You can take a look at her showing off her skills and what goes in to being a superhero in the training video below.

If there's one thing that is going to make the difference in defeating Thanos, and something the Hulk & Co. might have slacked on, it's leg day. Truthfully, these barbell overhead walking lunges are a whole body workout and you can tell how intense and focused Brie Larson is while doing them in this Instagram post. She's hitting depth too, not cheating or taking shortcuts. That's very Captain Marvel to do things the right way. While major stars like Brie Larson have stunt doubles to make them look good in action scenes, they still have to look the part and be believable as strong, capable heroes and that usually involves a tough diet and workout regimen, one that Brie Larson looks to be excelling at.

One cool thing about this is that for years we saw physical transformations from the likes of Hugh Jackman and Ben Affleck and other male actors as they put on muscle for their superhero roles, but now with more female superheroes making their way to the big screen, we are seeing that women can also bring a strength and physicality to these parts. Actresses like Alicia Vikander in Tomb Raider and Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman and now Brie Larson are setting a new standard for what heroes can look like. However, as the Hulk found out, strength alone will not be enough to stop Thanos, so hopefully, Captain Marvel is bringing some serious fighting skills and energy blasts to the table.

If fans were excited about Captain Marvel before Infinity War, they are infinitely more so after it. The post-credits scene found Nick Fury basically throwing up a Hail Mary page to Carol Danvers right as Thanos wiped out half the universe, Avengers included. This sets her up to be a huge deal in Avengers 4, a film that she has been confirmed to appear in. No disrespect to Ant-Man and the Wasp, but it's hard to argue that the newness and potential of Captain Marvel doesn't make that the most anticipated non-Avengers MCU film as we begin the year-long road to Avengers 4.
