Friday The 13th Writer Says The Franchise's Legal Battle Is A Nightmare

We are in an age of reboots, remakes and long-awaited sequels and nowhere is that more apparent than the horror genre, where horror icons like Pennywise, Michael Myers and Chucky all have or will soon return to cinema screens. One icon that hasnt yet returned is Jason from the Friday the 13th franchise. Thats because the property has been embroiled in a legal battle, one that is a nightmare, as original Friday the 13th writer Victor Miller explained:

Everybodys trying to settle all the little things and dot the Is, get the semicolons where they belong, and all that kind of stuff. Who gets what. Who has to give what to whom. So, to me, its a nightmare. If youve got two sides across the table this is poker. And you dont get to say, Well Ill take half the money and you take half the money. Thats not how it works. I cant be more specific than that.

Sure, a hockey-masked weirdo chasing you with a machete is not great fun, but sitting in a room with a bunch of lawyers hashing out rights issues in legalese, thats the real stuff of nightmares. Right now the complex ownership rights to who owns what and where when it comes to Friday the 13th are still being sorted out. As Victor Miller told YouTuber IAnthonyD, its not as simple as just saying that each side takes half and that makes the whole thing a nightmare.

Victor Miller won his lawsuit against original Friday the 13th director Sean Cunningham and other producers last year, thanks to a copyright law that allows authors to retrieve ownership rights to their work after 35 years. But that legal victory was just the beginning.

There is still the possibility that the case will be appealed, but as of now, the victory means that Victor Miller will have the domestic rights to Friday the 13th and Sean Cunningham will have them internationally. So the rights and profit split for any new projects using this property or its characters will have to be figured out.

This lawsuit is part of the reason why we havent had a new Friday the 13th movie in a decade. And if Sean Cunningham's side appeals, the can will only get kicked further down the road. If he doesnt appeal and decides to share the property with Victor Miller, the two sides will still have to come to a settlement for how the profits and rights will all work going forward.

Victor Miller also told IAnthonyD that he would love to be more involved in the franchise in the future, but that is just one of the things that will have to be resolved through the nightmarish legal battle currently going on. Hes not the only one that is interested in doing something with Friday the 13th, either.

LeBron James SpringHill Entertainment and Vertigo Entertainment were reported to be working on a Friday the 13th reboot and Blumhouse is also interested in doing for Jason what it did for Michael Myers with last years Halloween.

These kinds of rights issues seem to be rather prevalent in the horror genre. The Childs Play franchise has them, Scream has them, and we recently heard that although Blumhouse made the Halloween reboot-quel, the production company does not yet have the rights to do a sequel. Its all, in horror appropriate fashion, a bloody mess.

Nick Furys Infinity War Scene May Have Teased The Return Of Another Marvel Character

Despite being released back in April, moviegoers haven't stopped debating the wild events of Avengers: Infinity War. The Russo Brothers did the impossible by balancing a giant ensemble cast, while providing a story that has both action and character-driven story. And the devastating affect of Thanos' snap (aka The Decimation) was a plot twist no one saw coming.

Fans were left to watch in horror as Marvel favorites faded into dust. This included Nick Fury and Maria Hill, who briefly appeared in the film's post-credits scene. One fan has figured out who they were going to see before The Snap, believing it could mean that character is returning in Endgame. And no, it's not Phil Coulson.

Redditor freezer_face posted about it on the social media site, after re-watching Nick Fury's brief scene in Infinity War. He and Maria Hill mention going for a meeting with Cameron Klein, a S.H.I.E.L.D agent last seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Perhaps he survived The Decimation, and will have a larger role in S.H.I.E.L.D. now that his colleagues have been dusted, and the surviving Avengers are in such dire need of help.

Cameron Klein is played by Aaron Himelstein, and has had two small roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far. He was a S.H.I.E.L.D. technician in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, who was in the control room when Crossbones and his HYDRA agents attempted to gain control. He ultimately stood up against Frank Grillo's villain, and survived the beloved sequel.

He was also involved in Age of Ultron's Battle of Sakovia, and very nearly was killed by the titular villain himself, before being saved by Maria Hill and Nick Fury. And when they left S.H.I.E.L.D., he remained a contact from within the organization. As such, it tracks that Hill and Fury would be trying to make contact during Thanos' assault and the Battle of Wakanda.

That is, until they turned to dust before being able to grab much screen time. Luckily for fans of Samuel L. Jackson's cycloptic hero, Fury will return to the MCU in Captain Marvel.

There may be no more universally loved movie franchise than the Toy Story films. The three previous entries are some of Pixar's most successful, and best reviewed, movies, among a slate of films that are some of the most beloved animated movies ever made. There's little question that this weekend's Toy Story 4 is going to be a big movie, but current box office projections indicate the movie could actually be even bigger than we thought, with an opening weekend that could top $160 million in North America..

Estimates a couple months back were pegging Toy Story 4 at around $130 million domestically, which was a perfectly impressive number on it's own. It would have still exceeded Toy Story 3's opening of $110 million by a decent margin. Now, however, Deadline, is reporting that the actual domestic number could be somewhere between $160 and $200 million, as part of a global opening that could see the movie land somewhere between $260 and $300 million.

There was never any question that Toy Story 4 was going to be a big movie. However, the last few weekends have actually been a little on the slow side with movies like Men in Black International, Secret Life of Pets 2 and Godzilla: King of the Monsters all underperforming to one degree or another. This fact has led some to conclude that audiences have begun to take issues with sequels and franchises, but clearly that's not the case as Toy Story 4 is about to go nuts.

It does seem that audiences might be chomping at the bit to spend some money at the movies and there's now a film opening that enough people are excited about that everybody will be there opening weekend. Whatever the reason that these other movies haven't excited audiences, this one certainly does. It also has the added benefit of appealing to a mass audience, meaning entire families will be buying tickets to this one.

If Toy Story 4 really does see a $300 million global opening it will very nearly surpass the box office total of the original film in a single weekend. Toy Story 3 more than doubled the global box office of the second film when it broke the $1 billion mark, a feat that seems quite likely the new movie will be able to repeat based on these estimates.

It's also likely to be smooth sailing for Toy Story 4 to rake in the box office dollars for the next couple weeks. Toy Story 4 is opening against the Child's Play remake with Annabelle Comes Home following after that. A pair of horror movies are certainly not going after the same audience as Toy Story 4 despite the marketing attempts of Child's Play.

We can likely expect Toy Story 4 to rule the box office until Spider-Man: Far From Home arrives in theaters over the July 4th weekend.
