The Dark Phoenix Trailer Is Intense And Powerful

Although Logan and Deadpool 2 kept the X-Men film franchise in the public consciousness in 2017 and this year, respectively, 2019 marks our return to the main series of films with Dark Phoenix, following more than two and a half years after X-Men: Apocalypse drew mixed reactions. Originally set to be released this November, the latest adaptation of The Dark Phoenix Saga was pushed to next Valentine's Day to accommodate reshoots. With a little less than five months to go until that date, and on the heels of the first poster, 20th Century Fox has finally released the first trailer for Dark Phoenix, which you can watch below!

In 2006, X-Men: The Last Stand showed audiences Jean Grey succumbing to the Phoenix Force for the first time on the big screen. The end result was not received well by fans, to the point that X-Men: Days of Future Past wiped that movie from continuity. Now that the X-Men franchise is operating in a new timeline, The Dark Phoenix Saga is getting a shot at cinematic redemption through Dark Phoenix, which will see Jean unleashing her Phoenix abilities nearly a decade after she used it to destroy En Sabah Nur in X-Men: Apocalypse. Along with the different time period, you can tell from the trailer that Dark Phoenix is handling this storyline differently, though still hitting some of the same beats as The Last Stand.

Just like Patrick Stewart's Professor X, James McAvoy's version took measures to keep Jean from being taken over by the Phoenix Force when she was young. TheDark Phoenix trailer doesn't make it clear how these contingencies are broken, but as previously revealed, the main story kicks off when the X-Men go on a rescue mission in space, during which time they're hit by a solar flare. Presumably this is what causes Jean to lose control, leaving it up to both her teammates (including Cyclops, who looks to now be romantically involved with Jean) to stop her. Well, them and Magneto, who as per usual is willing to take more drastic measures. Oh, and let's not forget Jessica Chastain's unnamed character, an alien shapeshifter who wants to harness Jean's incredible powers so that her species can rule the galaxy.

The main X-Men movies have never shied away from being dark, but all the footage in this trailer, as well "The end" repeating as the music plays indicates Fox is aiming for this entry to kick it up a notch or two. That being said, "The end" could have another meaning. With Disney acquiring 20th Century Fox, it's only a matter of time before the X-Men and Fantastic Four properties are absorbed into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So even though spinoffs like New Mutants and X-Force are on the way, it's possible that Dark Phoenix could be the last of the main X-Men movies. If that's the case, this trailer indicates this series is going to go out with a bang, and rightly so. After nearly 20 years of watching these mutant characters, if this is the last hurrah, it should be extremely memorable.

Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more coverage concerning Dark Phoenix as we count down to its release on February 14, 2019. In the meantime, check out our X-Men movies guide to see what else this franchise has in development, as well as our 2019 release schedule to learn what non-mutant-centric movies arrive next year.

The Downton Abbey Movie Has An Official Release Date

The Downton Abbey Movie Has An Official Release Date

Ever since Downton Abbey finished its six-season run in 2016, talk of a follow-up movie has persisted. A few months back, the Downton Abbey movie was officially announced, ensuring that this wouldn't be a Deadwood situation where fans have to wait a decade-plus. Things got moving rather quickly too and the film started shooting just a few weeks ago in London. Now fans of the acclaimed series can mark their calendars because the official release date for the film has been announced. The Crawley family returns, this time on the big screen, on Friday, September 20, 2019.

Focus Features will release the film for domestic audiences on September 20 of next year, but international audiences get to return to Downton Abbey just a bit sooner, as Universal Pictures International will release the film a week earlier on September 13, 2019. So fans of the popular and acclaimed series only have a year to wait to see how the story continues after creator Julian Fellowes delivered a happy ending with the series finale.

Remarkably, given the massive size of the cast and the post-Downton Abbey success some of them have went on to, the show's original principal cast will be returning for the movie. This includes, among others, Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Brendan Coyle, Michelle Dockery and even the Dowager Countess herself, Maggie Smith, whose previous comments made it seem like she had no interest whatsoever in a Downton Abbey movie. Not returning is actress Lily James, who has went on to leading lady status in recent years and this summer starred in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. According to Lily James though, her absence makes sense story-wise. Although she will be missed, there are also a bunch of new additions to the cast, including the talented Imelda Staunton.

We don't have any plot details as of yet, but we do know that series creator Julian Fellowes wrote the movie's script, so whatever it is, it should be true to the vision of Downton Abbey. Michael Engler, who helmed several episodes of the series, including the series finale, will handle directing duties on the Downton Abbey film.

For those who didn't watch the series, Downton Abbey followed the lives of the Crawley family and their domestic servants on a country estate in England in the early 1900s. The period drama was set against the backdrop of several historic events like the First World War, the Spanish influenza pandemic and the Irish War of Independence, and it showed the changing nature of the British aristocracy in the early 20th century.

The Downton Abbey movie isn't the only eagerly anticipated movie hitting theaters next year. 2019 is full of reasons to head to the theater. You can check all of them out in our 2019 release schedule.

What Lando: A Star Wars Story Could Be About, According To Donald Glover And Phoebe Waller-Bridge

What Lando: A Star Wars Story Could Be About, According To Donald Glover And Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Sure, Alden Ehrenreich is going to take center stage as Han Solo this weekend when Solo: A Star Wars Story premieres, but there's another character who has audiences talking: Lando Calrissian. Donald Glover's portrayal of the legendary scoundrel has become one of the most talked-about elements of the entire film, and his complicated relationship with Phoebe Waller-Bridge's L3-37 has stood out as a vital element of the film's narrative. On that note, CinemaBlend recently had a chance to talk to Glover and Waller-Bridge at the recent Solo press day in Los Angeles, and the L3 actress admitted that she wants to see the origins of this relationship if Lando: A Star Wars Story eventually happens. The actress explained:

I'd love to see how they met, because I think that would be an alternative meet-cute that we haven't seen before. Yeah, I'd wanna know how their paths crossed in the beginning.

The Star Wars franchise timeline is ripe for exploration, and these movies can go backward and forward in time as needed. With that degree of flexibility, Phoebe Waller-Bridge wants to take this spinoff franchise even further back in time to show the origin of Lando's introduction to L3, and how they struck up the relationship seen in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

We should note that Solo: A Star Wars Story lays quite a bit of groundwork to set up this relationship. Building off of Phoebe Waller-Bridge's remarks, Donald Glover chimed and talked about how Solo alludes to their history without explicitly giving too much away. The duo continued:

Donald Glover: You kind of allude to there being sort of like relationship thing. I want to see those moments. Not like physically.Phoebe Waller-Bridge: Why wouldn't you want to see that?Donald Glover: I feel like the internet will do that for us.

If these remarks make it seem like there's some evident romantic tension between the characters, that's because there kind of is. In fact, while speaking out about Lando in Solo: A Star Wars Story, screenwriter Jonathan Kasdan explained that there's a "fluidity" surrounding Lando's sexuality and that L3 falls into that spectrum of beings he's attracted to. Solo: A Star Wars Story is very much Han's arc, but it sounds like a potential spinoff could feature some love stories that we've never seen in a Star Wars movie before.

Want to get a closer look at our chat with Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge? Check out a clip from our Solo: A Star Wars Story interview, below!

Audiences will get a chance to see the younger version of Lando debut on the big screen this weekend when Solo: A Star Wars Story premieres on May 25. We will bring you more information related to the possibility of Lando: A Star Wars Story as new details become available to us, and until then, mark down your calendars for the release of Star Wars: Episode IX on December 20, 2019!
