Another Way Captain Marvel Is Making History For Women In The Superhero Genre

Marvel didn't beat Warner Bros. to the punch with the first (successful) female-led superhero blockbuster, but it'll be making up for lost time with Captain Marvel. The film stars Brie Larson, is co-directed by Anna Boden and has six women credited for the screenplay. Captain Marvel is being pushed as a big movie for Marvel Studios, and they've just added one more integral component to the team to help make that happen: the composer. Marvel has enlisted Pinar Toprak to score the movie, not only making her the first female composer at Marvel, but the first female composer in the superhero genre.

Music is an absolutely integral part to any movie, and one of the critiques of Marvel Studios is that they don't produce "iconic" scores for their heroes. That's a bit debatable, but the studio has produced some high-quality soundtracks over the last few movies (Black Panther, anyone?) One of the next big films on Marvel's plate is Captain Marvel, which will introduce the title hero to the masses. Captain Marvel may end up leading the MCU in the coming years, so she needs a big epic score to accompany her.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Marvel Studios has hired Pinar Toprak to write that music, and in the process has made some notable history. Toprak, who has composed scores for movies, TV shows, and video games such as Krypton, Fortnite, and some additions to Justice League, is the first female composer to work on a movie in the MCU. Not only that, but she's the first female composer to score a major comic book movie for any studio. That's a big deal, and Toprak took the time to share her thought over on social media.

In a post on her Instagram page, Toprak thanked her agents and Captain Marvel's co-directors, Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden for giving her the opportunity.

Captain Marvel is certainly shaping up to be a major blockbuster. The movie is currently filming, and will follow the story of Carol Danvers, a woman who gains incredible superpowers and winds up in the middle of an intergalactic war between two alien races. The film will feature plenty of familiar faces such as younger versions of Nick Fury and Phil Coulson, in addition to Guardians of the Galaxy villains Ronan and Korath. Joining the MCU for the first time are Jude Law, Ben Mendelsohn, Gemma Chan, and Annette Bening.

Captain Marvel is set to release in theaters on March 8, 2019. To learn more about the movie, here's everything we know so far.

I’m so thrilled to finally announce that I will be scoring the upcoming CAPTAIN MARVEL! It’s an incredible honor to be a part of the Marvel Universe. So many thoughts racing through my head. And the main one is gratitude. I have so many people to thank for helping me on this journey but first and foremost, my incredible agents Laura Engel and Richard Kraft for believing in me from day one and Dave Jordan and directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck for giving me this opportunity of a lifetime. #captainmarvel

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile Writer Explains Why The Netflix Movie Has No Actual Murder

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile Writer Explains Why The Netflix Movie Has No Actual Murder

Netflixs Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile is centered on an infamous Ted Bundy who confessed to 30 murders across the United States before being sent to the electric chair for his crimes. If youve seen the film starring Zac Efron though, you know it doesnt classify as the gory slasher one might expect from a movie tracing the serial killers life.

This was intentional and theres a good reason why. Heres how the films writer Michael Werwie explained that creative choice:

I was compelled by all of the mundane domestic details of his life and I thought an interesting way into a serial killer's story would be to show no serial killing at all. I wanted to explore the love story of it all. This is more of a human side of the story. Its about the people who had an emotional connection to Ted Bundy. This is about seduction, betrayal and its also about the truth. The emotional side of the story is what makes the movie different than the documentary.

While many movies of this subject matter have focused on the shocking crimes themselves, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile is a study of the killers life outside his infamous murders. The film tells the story from the way his longtime girlfriend, Elizabeth Liz Kloepfer, learned of his dark psyche. They met at a bar in 1969, fell in love and lived out a happy life with her daughter for many years before news of his crimes surfaced. Some have accused the film of glamorizing the killer but its telling the story through the eyes of someone who loved him.

Lily Collins, who plays Liz in the film and director Joe Berlinger visited Kloepfer prior to shooting the film. Berlinger said looking through the photo albums of skiing trips, camping and birthday parties that reminded him of his own memorabilia cemented the films direction to be from the perspective of Bundys home life with Liz.

The director had recently explored all the gruesome details of Bundys crimes in his documentary Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes and wanted to go in another direction for the feature film. In his words to THR:

Conversations is much more of a clinical dissection of the terrible things he did. This movie is an emotional unwrapping of the level to which he was able to deceive, not just Elizabeth Kloepfer, but the American media that kind of made him into a perverse folk hero and the American judicious system.

The film also shows how the courts where Ted Bundy was being tried was lenient with him because of his clean-cut look and charisma. Bundy was allowed to represent himself as a defense attorney. He escaped from prison twice because of how careless the security was about him. Berlinger noted that if hed been a person of color he wouldnt have been able to get away with so much with the justice system that he did.

If the perspective was shifted to one full of violence and slaughters, the audience wouldnt get the view of Ted Bundy everyone around him had. Its not until the end when Liz accepts his crimes and confronts him in prison to confess to him do we see a moment of Bundy being capable of brutality on screen.

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile is available to stream on Netflix now, along with these new titles coming to the platform this month.

Part of the film's mission is to explain where the eponymous hero comes from and who he is meant to be, and as a result there are segments of the narrative dedicated to his past. Specifically, there are numerous flashback sequences throughout the blockbuster — and while I was on the set last year, I learned key details about a few of them.
Aquaman Will Have Key Flashbacks To The Hero's Past
celebgossipnews.co/aquaman-will-have-key-flashbacks-to-the-heros-past/
These won't be the only flashbacks featured in Aquaman, but they certainly do give texture to how the movie is going to be approaching the titular heroes important backstory. In a world where we are regularly seeing more standard origin stories play out on the big screen, this sounds like a welcome reprieve.

Drew Goddard Updates Us On The Status Of X-Force

Drew Goddard Updates Us On The Status Of X-Force

With Deadpool 2 now out in theaters, audiences are terribly excited for the Merc With The Mouth's future on the big screen -- and that will next happen in writer/director Drew Goddard's X-Force. Unfortunately, we don't really have an expected arrival yet, with 20th Century Fox not announcing a release date just yet, but now we know when Goddard will start work on the blockbuster in earnest. I asked the filmmaker about balancing the project with his most recent directorial effort, and he told me,

It's a good question. I've learned I'm very much a one-movie-at-a-time kind of guy, and they all know. It's the same studio, which is nice, so they can say, 'Okay, get [Bad Times At The El Royale] done,' and then once I get this movie done and get this into theaters we'll turn our attention that way.

I spent the first few days of this week in Lake Tahoe as part of a press event for Bad Times At The El Royale, and it was at the end of my interview with Drew Goddard that I asked about the status of X-Force. The director's sophomore film is notably coming together extremely fast -- it started production in January and will be in theaters in October -- and it turns out he hasn't had a ton of time to dedicate towards thinking about his first big comic book movie. It's all for the best, however, as it turns out he's not big on juggling projects.

Drew Goddard has had some experience already working in the world of superhero adaptations, though there have been a few hitches along the way. After providing some advice to Joss Whedon about the characterization of Loki in the making of The Avengers, he had his first real opportunity to contribute to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the Daredevil series on Netflix. He is still credited as the creator, and wrote the first two episodes, but in the midst of development he left to work with Sony on their Sinister Six film -- planned as a spin-off from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. That particular franchise wound up abruptly ending, with Spidey swinging back to the MCU, and that idea went on the shelf, but in late 2017 he was hired by Fox to helm their long-awaited X-Force movie.

Outside of comic book features, Drew Goddard has kept himself extremely busy since making his directorial debut with The Cabin In The Woods, with his greatest achievement being the Academy Award nomination he earned for writing 2015's The Martian. That being said, Bad Times At The El Royale will be only the second movie he's directed, arriving more than six years after his brilliant meta horror film. That certainly supports his sentiment regarding being a "one-movie-at-a-time kind of guy," though fans are still incredibly hungry to see what he will do with Deadpool, Cable, Domino and more in X-Force.

While we don't yet know how long we'll have to wait for the arrival of X-Force, there is plenty of Drew Goddard's work coming soon. The amazing NBC comedy series The Good Place, which he contributes to as an Executive Producer, is beginning its third season on September 27th. And as mentioned, on the big screen we will soon get to be entranced by the star-studded Bad Times At The El Royale, starring Jeff Bridges, Chris Hemsworth, Dakota Johnson, Jon Hamm, Nick Offerman, Cynthia Erivo and more. Fox will have it in theaters on October 5th, and be sure to stay tuned here on CinemaBlend for more from my interviews!

So what is next for Goddard? He's been attached as a writer and director of an X-Force movie, which would be the next film to follow Deadpool 2 and reunite characters like Deadpool, Domino and Cable. While Goddard is hopeful that happens, there's no update on it right now and it doesn't appear work has started on it, either.

Drew Goddard Updates Us On The Status Of X-Force

X-Force brings the popular team from Marvel Comics to life, spinning off from Deadpool 2 and fleshing out the mutant mercenaries. Directed and written by Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods, Daredevil), the film could be the start of a whole new franchise tied to the world of Wade Wilson and featuring lower-tier comic characters from the '80s and '90s.
