Sonic The Hedgehogs Director Promises That Design Changes Are Coming

Two days ago, the first trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie was released, and the reception has not been stellar, to put it lightly. Most of the backlash has been directed towards Sonic himself, as the Ben Schwartz-voiced version of the Sega character looks radically different than how hes been traditionally depicted.

Well, dont let it be said that fan complaints have never resulted in a movie being changed. Sonic the Hedgehog director Jeff Fowler has seen and heard the negative reactions towards the upcoming video game movie, and hes promised that improvements are on the way. Heres what Fowler announced to the world:

While Im usually not a fan of audiences having a say in how an upcoming movie should look or flow, it is rather refreshing to see a creative mind recognize criticism and, rather than continue on full-stream ahead with the original plan, is willing to make adjustments. For Sonic the Hedgehog, one would think that things can only improve from here, although hopefully this doesnt result in a slippery slope where filmmakers are caving to the demands of the public more often.

It was always going to be a difficult creative endeavor adapting the cartoonish Sonic into a CGI character who looks like he belongs in the real world, but its safe to say that most people are not digging his humanoid look for the upcoming movie. His human teeth are especially unsettling, but at least Ben Schwartzs voice is still a good fit for the super fast extraterrestrial rodent.

Theres only six months to go until Sonic the Hedgehogs release, so it will be interesting to see how much the eponymous characters design can be changed in that time. Its doubtful this will be a total overhaul, otherwise the movie would likely need to be pushed back. Ideally whenever the next Sonic the Hedgehog trailer drops, some, if not all of these changes will be noticeable.

If Jeff Fowler and his team are looking for inspiration on how to improve Sonic the Hedgehogs design, theres no shortage of fan creations to be found online. For example, heres one from Twitter user Edward Pun thats making the rounds:

For his first movie, Sonic finds himself on Earth trying to collect his rings (just like in the video games), evade being captured by the U.S. government and defeat the maniacal Dr. Ivo Robotnik, a.k.a. Dr. Eggman, played by Jim Carrey. Sonic will be aided by James Marsdens Tom Wachowski, a former officer from the San Francisco Police Department who is now Sheriff of Green Hills, Montana. The movies cast also includes Tika Sumpter, Adam Pally and Neal McDonough.

Sonic the Hedgehog races into theaters on November 8, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for continuing coverage. As for what else is coming out this year, check out our 2019 release schedule.

How Sebastian Stan Responded To Black Panther's Mid-Credits Twist

By  at December 06, 2022  , , ,  No comments
How Sebastian Stan Responded To Black Panther's Mid-Credits Twist

In the increasingly interconnected Marvel Cinematic Universe, Black Panther was unique. Unlike other Phase Three films, Black Panther didn't really address the wider MCU, feature a lot of other heroes or even set up the missing Soul Stone. However, Black Panther did feature a fun cameo in its mid-credits scene with the Winter Soldier. Bucky Barnes awakened from cryosleep and in Wakanda, with the Wakandan children calling him "White Wolf". This nod to the character from the comics was a fun twist, teasing a possible future for Bucky Barnes. Actor Sebastian Stan liked the twist and it actually made him want to revisit the comics, as he explained:

Now talking about comic books and merging them with the MCU, I want to go and revisit the Black Panther comics because of the White Wolf situation. And that's a whole different line, so I didn't even see that really going that way and understanding what that could be. But it's really clever the way they do it, if you think about it. I look at that and I go, 'Of course. That makes sense, that feels well.' I don't know how they think about it.

Like many of us, this fun twist seems to have been surprising for Sebastian Stan as well. In the Black Panther comics, the White Wolf is a man named Hunter who is adopted by T'Chaka. He is a fierce warrior who leads Wakanda's secret police and has a complicated relationship with his adoptive brother, King T'Challa. It is surprising that Marvel introduced the White Wolf moniker into MCU canon, but as Sebastian Stan tells Kinowetter, it actually makes a ton of sense. The Winter Soldier already has difficult history with T'Challa, and yet he will be defending Wakanda all the same when Thanos comes to town. So having Bucky Barnes become the White Wolf would be a clever way of introducing the character.

What Sebastian Stan is speaking to here is how Marvel incorporates elements from the comics in ways that work for the films. We didn't get direct adaptations of the Planet Hulk or Civil War comic book storylines, but those tales inspired the direction for the movies. These are different mediums, but Marvel cherrypicks the best and most appropriate stuff for adaptation into the cinematic universe, and does so in a way that honors the inspiration while constantly providing nods to deep cuts from the source material.

Now it remains to be seen whether or not Marvel actually has Bucky Barnes adopt the White Wolf identity from the comics, complete with his own white vibranium suit. It is entirely possible that the White Wolf mention in Black Panther was simply a fun Easter egg and nothing more; a bit of fan service for those who know the comics. But if Marvel should decide to have Bucky be the film version of the White Wolf, it has already been set up for him to do so in a way that makes sense and still honors the spirit of the character. This is all pending he survives Avengers: Infinity War, of course. And if he takes on the White Wolf identity, that makes Steve Rogers' successor to the Captain America mantle much clearer.

You can watch that post-credits scene again and all of Black Panther when it hits Blu-ray on May 15. But before that, you can see Bucky Barnes unfrozen and on the field of battle when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on April 27. Be sure to keep an eye on our Marvel Cinematic Universe page for all the latest from Earth's Mightiest heroes.

But there are other problems too; Stan Lee is nervous about the unwated association with the ~much more political~ Black Panthers, so tells protege editor Roy Thomas to change it. "Black Leopard" lasts less than a year, and Roy Thomas mostly calls him "T'Challa in the interrim.

Black Panther responded, "Let them try." Sebastian Stan goes along with such reasoning as he talked about where he left off in Civil War , according to Cinema Blend a couple of months ago. It seems rather speculative even on his end on how he'll come to pass in Infinity War .

The Internet Cant Get Enough Of Emma Stone's Golden Globe Apology To Sandra Oh

The Internet Cant Get Enough Of Emma Stone's Golden Globe Apology To Sandra Oh

Last night's Golden Globes ceremony was full of memorable moments, but one of the best came at the very start of the evening. Co-host Sandra Oh was praising the diversity of the evening nominees, especially the Best Picture nomination of Crazy Rich Asians. She then made a joke about Hollywood's tendency to cast white actresses in supposedly Asian roles, which resulted in an on the spot apology from one of those actresses. Check out the clip below.

Sandra Oh picks out Ghost in the Shell and Aloha to be the target of her joke. The former was a film based on a Japanese manga and anime that starred Scarlett Johansson, while the latter starred Emma Stone in the role of a woman who was supposed to be one-quarter Chinese and one-quarter native Hawaiian descent. After the laughter dies down, you can hear Stone herself, who was nominated last night for a Golden Globe for her role in The Favourite, shout out "I'm sorry."The best part might actually be that Sandra Oh clearly hears Stone and visibly reacts to the response. That joke clearly landed just the way she wanted it to. As one would expect, social media was all over the exchange. Sandra Oh's calling out of these casting decisions was funny enough on its own, but Emma Stone publicly apologizing was the icing on the cake.

Aloha is a movie that, if you remember it at all, that's likely because of the controversy that Emma Stone's casting caused when it was announced. The movie itself didn't make much of an impact, whether or not the controversy itself was part of the reason for that is hard to tell. However, Emma Stone clearly now admits that her taking the role was a mistake. Stone is getting points for both admitting fault and being funny at the same time, while Sandra Oh is just getting universal love for standing on the Golden Globes stage and bringing attention to the problem.

On the plus side, the success of Crazy Rich Asians, both at the box office and as a potential award winner may go a long way to helping to make sure that these sorts of bizarre casting decisions don't happen again. At the end of the day, that's what many people want the focus here to be on, as some on social media are afraid the message is being lost on the laugh line.

This was just one of several memorable moments from last night Golden Globe Awards. Be sure to check out our complete coverage of the event last night including all the winners in both the film and television categories.
