How Captain Marvel Can Make Interesting Changes To A Marvel Villain

Outside of flashbacks, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has rarely turned its attention to the past. 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger wound the clock back to show Steve Rogers' origin story during World War II, and technically Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was also technically a "period" piece since it was set in 2014, three years before the movie was released. But before Avengers 4 concludes Phase Three and ushers in a new MCU era, the franchise is visiting the 1990s for Captain Marvel, and last week it was announced that along with Samuel L. Jackson playing a two-eyed Nick Fury, the movie will also feature younger versions of Clark Gregg's Phil Coulson, Lee Pace's Ronan the Accuser and Djimon Honsou's Korath the Pursuer. While Coulson's return to the big screen is certainly a big deal, the fact that Ronan and Korath are involved presents a great opportunity to improve upon their characterizations, especially where Ronan is concerned.

Both Ronan the Accuser and Korath were introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy, with Ronan serving as the main antagonist and Korath being his main flunky (you may think that honor belonged to Nebula, but remember that she was initially only being loaned out by Thanos). The movie made it clear that Ronan was not a fan of the peace treaty between the Kree Empire and the Nova Corps of Xandar, and he originally planned to deliver the Orb (a.k.a. the Power Stone) to Thanos in exchange for the Mad Titan helping him destroy Xandar. That plan was tossed aside once Ronan secured the Orb and realized he could get the job done with Thanos' help. In the end, his overconfidence was his downfall, as the Guardians managed to redirect the Orb's destructive energy back at him, while Korath was killed earlier in the final conflict by Drax the Destroyer. Until last week, we just assumed that we'd never see those two again, but now that they're confirmed to appear in Captain Marvel, we'll get a peek into their past, which by extension will ideally help us understand Ronan better.

It's no secret that the Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn't have a great track record with its main antagonists. Sure there are exceptions here and there, like Loki, Vulture and Killmonger, but many of the other baddies have come across as one-dimensional, generic or didn't live up to their full potential. Working only off Guardians of the Galaxy, Ronan is definitely one of the MCU's villainous misses, but Captain Marvel can help change that. Guardians of the Galaxy showed that Ronan hated the Xandarian citizens because they had killed his father, grandfather and great-grandfather during the Kree-Nova War. That's fine enough motivation if we're looking solely at Guardians of the Galaxy, but now we know that the Kree-Nova War isn't the only massive conflict he was involved in.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said last summer that Captain Marvel will tap into the mythology of the Kree-Skrull War, and the Skrulls are also showing up in the movie, it stands to reason that Ronan and Korath have had some experience with the shapeshifting aliens. The Kree Empire signing a peace treaty with the Nova Corps may have been what pushed Ronan over the edge, but what if the events in Captain Marvel are what shifted him from dependent military officer to a fanatic?

As far as the MCU movies are concerned, Ronan has been our sole insight into the Kree, and even if we throw Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. into the mix, as the Kree has played an important role across the TV series, we still haven't learned much about this alien society's inner workings. Captain Marvel will fix that, because while there's no guarantee that Carol Danvers will visit the Kree homeworld, her time around Jude Law's Mar-Vell and other Kree operatives will help us understand the Kree hierarchy better, at least from a military standpoint.

As far as Ronan is concerned, perhaps he was calmer and more cautious during this period, carrying out orders from his superiors obediently. For all we know, Ronan, like Mar-Vell, will be one of Carol's allies during the movie, though given that Ben Mendelsohn is rumored to be playing Kree baddie Yon-Rogg, I wouldn't be surprised (if that rumor is true) if Ronan is working alongside him. Regardless, the events of Captain Marvel (particularly anything involving the enemy Skrulls) may make Ronan realize that his ideals and methods don't fall in line with the Kree leadership. That then paves the way for his full turn to fanaticism in Guardians of the Galaxy, where he's willing to destroy an entire planet for the sake of revenge.

Ronan's portrayal in Guardians of the Galaxy is locked in, and unless one of you has the Time Stone and can go back to make script changes, there's nothing we can do to fix that. Captain Marvel, on the other hand, can potentially do wonders with retroactively make him a more interesting character which in turn can help us appreciate him more when re-watching Guardians of the Galaxy. As for Korath, obviously anything Captain Marvel can do to make him more interesting is welcome, but since his main function is being the mercenary who aids Ronan in his goals, it's not nearly as important to flesh him out. At the very least, maybe Captain Marvel will show why Korath decided to pledge allegiance to Ronan.

Captain Marvel flies into theaters on March 8, 2019. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates about the movie, and in the meantime, you can look forward to Avengers: Infinity War dropping on April 27, followed by Ant-Man and the Wasp on July 6.

What We Know About Ivan Drago's Return In Creed 2

What We Know About Ivan Drago's Return In Creed 2

Although Creed was perfectly enjoyable to watch on its own, ultimately it served as another piece of the wider Rocky mythology. After all, Michael B. Jordan's Adonis Creed is the son of the late Apollo Creed, who died in the ring boxing Russian powerhouse Ivan Drago in Rocky IV. Creed spent less time delving into Adonis' family ties and more into him training with Rocky Balboa to get his professional boxing career off the ground. So if Creed echoed the original Rocky, then Creed 2 unquestionably echoes Rocky IV, as the sequel sees Adonis going mano a mano with Viktor Drago, Ivan's son. And just like Adonis has Rocky in his corner for support, Viktor has daddy Drago, being reprised by Dolph Lundgren. The older Ivan was finally shown in the new Creed 2 trailer today, and the preview made it clear that more than 30 years after we last saw him, his intensity hasn't diminished.

Often considered one of the greatest villains in the Rocky franchise, Ivan Drago was introduced in 1985's Rocky IV as the Soviet Union's best boxer, his strength unparalleled thanks to a combination of training and injection of an unnamed substance (assumed to be steroids). Unlike the boastful Clubber Lang from Rocky III, Ivan was a man of few words and only had one goal: to be the best fighter in the world. He proved just how powerful he was when he killed Apollo Creed, who didn't take Ivan seriously enough, with multiple blows to the head. As if killing an opponent in the ring wasn't bad enough, Ivan also didn't express any remorse for Apollo's death, having earlier uttered the famous line, "If he dies, he dies." Not taking the death of his friend sitting down, Rocky challenged Ivan to their own fight, and after going through an intense '80s training montage, our esteemed protagonist came out victorious after 15 rounds. The later Rocky movies never addressed what happened to Ivan afterwards, but the damage Rocky sustained during that fight led to brain damage, which played into his struggles during Rocky V.

This brings us to Creed 2, where Ivan Drago is back after more than 30 years and has trained his son Viktor for his own boxing career. Dolph Lundgren has previously said that he was initially hesitant to reprise Ivan after all this time because he didn't want to hurt the "image" of this iconic character, but after reading the Creed 2 script and seeing that this movie was a chance to show Ivan's "damaged, struggling side," he signed on. This suggests that Creed 2 will explore Ivan's vulnerabilities; whether they're physical (maybe injecting that junk took a toll on his body) or psychological.

However, that doesn't mean that Ivan will be any less of an antagonistic figure. As Rocky notes in the new Creed 2 trailer, Viktor Drago was "raised in hate," implying that Ivan did whatever it took to ensure his son would also be a great fighter, no matter what the cost. And clearly Rocky's fight with Ivan still heavily looms in his mind, as he tells Adonis that Ivan broke things in him "that ain't ever been fixed" and he doesn't want Adonis to suffer a similar fate going up against Viktor.

Just like how Rocky didn't step back into the ring for Creed, we shouldn't expect Ivan Drago to either for Creed 2, although that doesn't necessarily preclude him from getting into a tussle with someone outside of a boxing setting. That said, since the news anchor in the Creed 2 trailer says that it's Viktor Drago who challenges Adonis rather than the other way around, I wouldn't be surprised if this was done on Ivan's urging. He can no longer fight professionally, but having seen Adonis rise up in the boxing world, he sees this as an opportunity for his son to knock the main protagonist off his perch and bring some glory back to the Drago name. And just like what happened with Apollo, if Viktor happens to kill Adonis in the ring, so be it.

We'll find out what's in store for Ivan Drago when Creed 2 punches its way into theaters on November 21. If you're interested in learning what else is screening for the rest of the year, look through our 2018 release schedule.

One Challenge Rian Johnson Has When Developing His New Star Wars Trilogy

One Challenge Rian Johnson Has When Developing His New Star Wars Trilogy

We're just one movie away from the completion of the current Star Wars trilogy, which means that the story of the Skywalkers is almost well and truly finished. After that, Rian Johnson will premiere a brand new trilogy with entirely new characters and settings that will hopefully satisfy longtime fans, while creating a generation of new ones. It's a tough challenge to be sure, but Johnson seems game to take it on. One of the biggest challenges for the writer-director is defining exactly what makes a Star Wars film so special.

Once you get past the things that are the iconography of Star Wars - once you say, okay, if it doesn't have the Falcon; if it doesn't have someone with Skywalker as their last name; if we don't go to Tatooine, what is it? What is it at its essence? It's a really exciting question, and I think it's something that has to be answered at some point. So let's figure it out.

Ahead of the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Lucasfilm announced that Rian Johnson would be creating an all-new trilogy of Star Wars films. This series will take place in an entirely different corner of the galaxy, one far away from the troubles of the Skywalker family. It's still incredibly early in the development of these movies, and Rian Johnson is only "just at the very beginning" of figuring what exactly they are going to be, but the possibilities are quite literally endless. It's enough of a challenge to make a regular Star Wars movie (see: Rogue One), but how do you make a new entry in the franchise bereft of the recognizable elements that make that series iconic? That's what Johnson has to figure out.

While speaking to IGN, Rian Johnson addressed the challenge of making a Star Wars film without any Skywalkers or the Millennium Falcon. It's an extremely interesting concept and one that Johnson seems excited to figure out. The director said that he was trying to find the core element of Star Wars, the part that made him excited as a kid watching the movie for the first time. It's certainly not a task that I'm envious of but I'm interested to see what Johnson comes up with.

At the moment, every Star Wars film has had something to do with the main series. Even the standalone films, which test the waters of independent stories, are connected to events or characters from the "Skywalker Saga" in some way. Rian Johnson will be breaking ground on his new series, and whether or not he directs and writes the whole thing, we'll be paying close attention.

You can get your yearly dose of Star Wars with the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, in theaters on May 25, 2018.

9 Questions We Still Have About Avengers: Infinity War

9 Questions We Still Have About Avengers: Infinity War

After a decade of buildup and years of waiting, the biggest comic book movie in history finally arrives when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters next month. The film begins the culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Excitement is already at a fever pitch for this movie, which will tie into every other MCU title. Infinity War promises to bring together almost all the heroes of Marvel's universe to battle Thanos as the Mad Titan tries to acquire all of the Infinity Stones. The movie looks to be every bit as fun, epic and awe-inspiring as the most hardcore of fanboys could wish for.

With a few trailers worth of footage and lots of insight from the directors and cast, we are finally getting a pretty good idea of what this movie will be. Although we can paint a picture with broad strokes, there are still a lot of unknowns about Infinity War. Part of the mystery stems from the fact that the MCU post-Avengers 4 is a secret. We know we're getting a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 but beyond that we are in the dark. Heck, even the title of Avengers 4 remains an enigma. The lack of an established future creates for a great deal of uncertainty in Infinity War. With everything so up in the air, few characters are safe and we are preparing for all manner of surprises, craziness and heartbreak.

So, with all of that in mind, here are the questions we're wondering about as we wait for destiny to arrive in Avengers: Infinity War.

What Is The Avengers' Plan To Fight Thanos? The most recent trailer gives us an idea that the Avengers learn ahead of time that Thanos is on his way, which at least allows them to prepare a defensive strategy on home turf. Tony Stark can be heard talking about using what Thanos wants, so that does raise the possibility that they will use the Infinity Stones. But with the Mind Stone already in Vision's forehead and the Time Stone in Doctor Strange's Eye of Agomotto, those two are basically already weaponized. I think there is a good possibility that Vision is sent to Wakanda to hide and perhaps to lure Thanos in. The African nation is the most technologically advanced place on Earth, and thus stands the best chance of defending itself against the Mad Titan and the Black Order. There is also an instance in the trailer where Tony Stark and Peter Quill are debating the merits of a plan as a bemused Peter Parker looks on. This seems to be a different part of the movie and may involve them going to space or attacking Thanos' ship, Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum style.

What's Up With Hawkeye And Ant-Man?Absences that initially seemed like oversights that would be remedied with subsequent trailers have become impossible to ignore with each passing trailer and poster that doesn't feature these two characters. We know that both Clint Barton and Scott Lang are in this movie, so they are clearly being held back for some reason. What's interesting is that we haven't even got a quick shot of either, so does that mean that seeing them at all would reveal some spoilerish detail? The Russo Brothers have spoken about Hawkeye being on his own journey in this film in the wake of the events of Captain America: Civil War. There has been speculation that the character will adopt the Ronin identity in this film and that's why he's being held back. As for Ant-Man, he has his own sequel movie hitting after Infinity War although it appears to take place before the cosmic clash. Maybe these two characters come in for a major save at the end or maybe they are on their own secret crucial side mission in the film, possibly looking for the Soul Stone.

What Will The Flashbacks Reveal About Thanos? After pulling strings behind the scenes for years, Thanos finally comes to the fore in Infinity War. The villain is one of the main characters in the film and will drive the story. We haven't learned much about Thanos in his limited MCU appearances thus far but Infinity War will be employing flashbacks to give us a crash course on the fearsome villain. The film already looks to be changing Thanos' motivations from the comics, where he is trying to impress Death. Despite being compared to Darth Vader, Thanos will be channeling his inner Jedi in Infinity War by trying to bring balance to the universe... by wiping out half of it. Why he thinks it is out of balance is an interesting thing that these flashbacks will hopefully explore. They could also show us more of Nebula and Gamora's childhood, and the reasons that Thanos will not be winning any father of the year contests. It would also be cool to see how Thanos came to power. Flashbacks can build up the menace of Thanos, explore his mythology and give the audience reason to invest in his story.

Who Lives, And Who Dies? This is one of the big ones. With contracts up, the end of an era and the seriousness of the threat, it's probably safe to say that not everyone is making it out of this movie. Certain characters are likely safe: Black Panther and Spider-Man have bright cinematic futures to live for. The trailers tease quite a few characters in serious danger, including Vision and Doctor Strange. However the real fan concern is for the fates of Tony Stark, Steve Rogers and Thor. All of them appear to take on Thanos in the trailers and we can see anyone of them sacrificing themselves to save their team or the Earth. Co-director Joe Russo said that Thor has a very important role in this film and as one of the most powerful Avengers, I can see him making a heroic final stand. Of course, people have suspected Cap will be killed off for some time now and with multiple characters that could pick up the mantle, his time may have finally come. I can make a case for each of these three to bite the dust, but I struggle to see how everyone survives.

Will We See The Soul Stone? For those of you keeping score at home, five of the incalculably powerful Infinity Stones are accounted for, with only the orange Soul Stone still in the wind. The film may change things up, but the Soul Stone possesses the power to manipulate souls and preserve life after death. We thought it might show up in Black Panther but that didn't happen. It is possible that it is still in Wakanda and is the source of the heart-shaped herb's panacea and ancestral plane properties but maybe not. It could be hidden any number of places and there are plenty of theories as to its location. Of course we may not even see it until Avengers 4 if the Thanos story is a two-film arc. Maybe it shows up in Ant-Man and the Wasp in the Quantum Realm or maybe the MIA Hawkeye is on a mission for it. Thanos could also already have it, making things especially difficult to prevent him from completing the set. There are a lot of guesses but no firm answers, making the final Infinity Stone the most fascinating of the bunch.

How Many Infinity Stones Will Thanos Get?Following up on the previous question, we are wondering just how colorful Thanos' Infinity Gauntlet will get in Infinity War. For the most part in the trailers, he can be seen with two of the six. He's seen sporting the purple Power Stone, which means he must have taken it from the Nova Corps with whom it resided after Guardians of the Galaxy. The blue Space Stone almost certainly comes from Loki giving Thanos the Tesseract in what may prove a fatal mistake. Thanos may not even fill his gauntlet in Infinity War, especially if Avengers 4 continues his arc. Where things get especially interesting is if we consider marketing subterfuge. Thor had two eyes in the trailers for Thor: Ragnarok and based on that bit of trickery, Thanos could have more, fewer, or different Infinity Stones than he is seen with in the trailers. I have to imagine that before Thanos is finally defeated in the MCU, we will see him with a full gauntlet and the might of six Infinity Stones, but if that happens in this movie remains to be seen.

Why Aren't All The Heroes Together? If you take a close look at the trailers, at who shows up where, you'll notice there's a locational divide. Infinity War seems to have at least three big locations: New York City, Wakanda and Space. In NYC, we see Wong, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Bruce Banner and Tony Stark defending the city. Presumably later in the film, we see the Guardians of the Galaxy teaming up with Iron Man & Co for what I'm guessing is the space mission. Over in Wakanda we see basically everyone else, including Cap, Widow, Vision, Wanda, Falcon, Rhodey and T'Challa. The only person we see in both NYC and Wakanda is Banner (I don't think Tony is in the Hulkbuster armor). So why is the Hulk the only one who makes the trip? Is this a divide and conquer strategy as different teams pursue different objectives? Hurt feelings from Civil War can't matter at a time like this, so maybe there is another reason why Tony's team isn't throwing down in Wakanda. Hopefully by the end they'll all come together for that huge airport-topping splash page battle we've heard about.

Will Infinity War End On A Cliffhanger?Avengers: Infinity War is in a unique place to really go out with a bang. We have heard that the culmination of the MCU begins with this film and ends with Avengers 4. While the director's comments make it seem that these two films are not one big film with two parts as initially conceived, it does sound like there is a narrative through line between them. So it is possible that Infinity War could end on a cliffhanger that wouldn't be resolved until a year later with prequel films in between. What would such a cliffhanger entail you ask? This could be dark like The Empire Strikes Back ending. Teasing or delivering an Avenger death before the credits roll seems like a bold way to go. Thanos could also complete his goal, collecting all six Infinity Stones for his gauntlet at which point he delivers that iconic moment from the comics, snapping his fingers before the movie cuts to black, Sopranos style. Infinity War going out on a cliffhanger would be torturous and rage inducing, but it would also be ballsy and awesome.

What Surprises And Cameos Will There Be?Okay, wild speculation time. As chock full of characters as Infinity War is, there are still some MCU characters who may or may not make an appearance. I can't help but feel like this film is ripe for fun cameos and people have been speculating for ages about who might show up. I don't think characters from Marvel's Netflix-verse will be in the film but the battle in NYC provides ample cameo opportunity. There is still hope for Agent Coulson to reunite with the Avengers and maybe do so alongside S.H.I.E.L.D. comrades Nick Fury and Maria Hill. There are also reasons to believe that Red Skull is alive and should be brought back to spread evil once again. The Wasp and Captain Marvel are likely being saved for the next film but you never know. Then there's the really crazy stuff that almost certainly won't happen, at least not yet, like an appearance by Wolverine, Nova, the Silver Surfer, the Fantastic Four or Adam Warlock. Still, I think that in a film this big and important, there are bound to be some fun surprises and at least a few cameos.

How Shazam! Managed To Keep Its Major Spoiler A Secret

Warning: spoilers for the third act of Shazam! are in play. If you havent seen the film yet, please bookmark this article, and come back once youre caught up.

Despite the fact the comic history behind Shazam! has integrated the idea of an entire family of heroes, all signs pointed to the DC Comics film being centered solely around Asher Angels Billy Batson and his super heroic alter ego played by Zachary Levi. Prior to the films release, there wasnt even a whisper about the rest of the familys eventual appearance during a pivotal moment in the third act. This is a pretty rare occurrence in this modern age of spoilers and leaks, and director David F. Sandberg recently revealed the following strategy was what made such a unique surprise possible:

We cast the kids first, and then sort of looked for a physical resemblance. And then, to keep things under wraps, just because things leaked as much as they do, we actually wrote custom scenes for each character that weren't from the movie. So the people who came in to audition had no idea that they were basically reading for a superhero.

As seen in this weekends #1 movie, Shazam! eventually expands the roster of superheroes to include Billy Batsons five foster siblings. Just as Asher Angel and Zachary Levi were cast to be the mortal and magic halves of the child/hero coin, there was obviously a need for other adult versions of all the other children in the family. Which eventually lead to the need to cast said adults, without letting them in on any big secrets that could accidentally leak into the world.

Its an ingenious move that other top secret productions have used to help throw off the scent of any potential spoilers. Basically, instead of having actors like D.J. Catrona or Adam Brody reading for the big showdown at the Chilladelphia Winter Festival towards the end of Shazam, fake scenes were written so the actors would get the gist of their characters during auditions, without revealing the big secrets.

One can never be too careful when it comes to a project as high profile as Shazam!, or any superhero franchise entry for that matter, because while its easy to discredit any leaks under the guise of fake spoilers, the eventual truth comes out once those first showings hit. David F. Sandberg not only understands this, but he also broke down the strategy, and one of the alternate scenes written, in the example from his talk with Screen Rant:

It was just sort of everyday scenes with characters that had the traits of them. So for Darla, Meagan Good, she read for a scene with a girl that's doing a driving test, and she's like a fast-talking character... I hope we can maybe put that on the Blu-ray or something, because they're fun scenes with these great actors.

Based on the results shown in the film, this method paid off, especially in the case of Goods portrayal of Darla, because it bases itself off of the very same sort of principal that any good comic adaptation like Shazam! builds its proper screenplay around. While nailing the look of a hero is important, getting the language and feel of the story into the script is paramount as well. If you can put that to bed easily, then you can write the characters youre tackling in any context, as seen here.

With Shazam! in theaters now, and Shazam! 2 retaining that first films screenwriter, its probably a safe bet that whomever auditions for crucial roles in that films narrative might not even know it until theyve signed on. So if you happen to be auditioning for Warner Bros and/or David F. Sandberg in the near future, youll probably want to make sure you take that SAT prep scene uber-seriously.
