How Avengers: Infinity War Came Up With Its Various Hero Pairings

How Avengers: Infinity War Came Up With Its Various Hero Pairings

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown by leaps and bounds since the first Avengers movie and there are numerous new characters who can now interact with each other. Our own Sean O'Connell got to visit the set of Infinity War several months ago and he asked the writers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, how they decided which characters to put together on screen. Apparently, it was a multi-month process just to figure out how different characters might interact if they were put together. According to McFeely,

After Civil War, we got in a room for 4 or 5 months trying to crack these two ridiculously big things...We talked a lot about, it's a Joe Russo term, 'strange alchemy.' What is it when you put the two characters together, even in a fairly normal traditional situation. But since we've invested in those characters and known them, we sort of delighted in the idea of those two people rubbing against each other. So, we always chased 'delight' -- and terror. Lots of terror.

The entire premise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the begging was essentially, let's create this handful of characters and then see what happens when you put them all in the same room together. Avengers: Infinity War, is that same concept but now multiplied by a factor of 10. With dozens of characters to choose from, Christopher Markus told us that they just had a wall of characters they were looking at and would seemingly randomly put any two of them together and consider what sort of story they could tell or what sort of humorous interaction might occur.

We've begun to see some of these interactions in the various trailers for Avengers: Infinity War. The most recent trailer showed us Iron Man and Star-Lord trying to come up with a plan and the egos of the two getting in the way. We know that Thor will be meeting up with the Guardians of the Galaxy as well and have seen Doctor Strange hanging out with Bruce Banner. All of these combinations promise some great action and/or comedy as everybody teams up to take on Thanos.

However, the writers were also quick to point out that just because there's a big scary bad guy out there, it doesn't mean that all these heroes are going to get along easily. Some characters, like one Bucky Barnes, has some baggage that comes with him from previous movies that will need to be dealt with. As Christopher Markus explained...

And there's also...we're coming off Civil War. We're coming off Winter Soldier. So that's there's lots of backstory that still needs to play out in addition to the Thanos situation. Like, I just walked by Sebastian Stan out there. You could put Bucky in a room with anybody and they're going to say, "Oh shit! He's a maniac." He's shot Natasha [Romanoff] twice as far as I can keep count. So it's going to be interesting.

It's a reminder that not every character interaction in Infinity War is going to be a positive one. These players have history and not all of it is good. We'll get to see it all come together April 27.

Apparently Johnny Depp's Return For Fantastic Beasts 3 Isn't Official Yet

Apparently Johnny Depp's Return For Fantastic Beasts 3 Isn't Official Yet

Johnny Depp is still currently expected to continue as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3 and the rest of the planned five-film franchise. However, on the heels of Warner Bros. delaying Fantastic Beasts 3 production again, but finally giving the movie a confirmed release date, word has come that Depp has yet to officially sign on for the 2021 movie.

This is one of those anonymous source situations, so stay in a skeptical Hermione mindset. That said, "a source close to Johnny Depp" told The Blast the actor has not been approached by the studio yet to exercise the option in his contract for Fantastic Beasts 3. The site said Depp does have a contract through the five-film franchise but, like the rest of the stars, his option for each movie is handled separately by Warner Bros.

What does that mean? Maybe nothing, especially without knowing the situations of the other main cast members. But The Blast also brought up Johnny Depp's legal issues -- specifically the ugly back-and-forth abuse allegations with ex-wife Amber Heard. The site said it too had been told a few Warner Bros. execs were pushing for Depp to be fired from Fantastic Beasts, but many of the "heavy hitters" have maintained full support.

One of those heavy hitters is said to be J.K. Rowling herself, and the Harry Potter author already made it clear before The Crimes of Grindelwald came out that she was fully supportive of Johnny Depp.

The very public issues between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard have been going on so long that his casting was put up for debate even before the second film came out. Now here we are waiting for the third film, and the ongoing lawsuits keep adding new allegations from both sides.

Johnny Depp has a defamation suit against Amber Heard tied to her Washington Post op-ed piece on speaking up against sexual violence. He claims her abuse allegations are part of an "elaborate hoax" to boost her career. His team is also trying to tie that op-ed to Depp losing his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in future Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Amber Heard's side accused Depp of trying to get her fired from her role as Mera in DC/Warner Bros.'s Aquaman.

Fantastic Beasts 3 was originally set to begin production this summer, with a hoped-for but not official release date of November 2020. Production was initially pushed back to late fall 2019. Dan Fogler (Jacob Kowalski) said filming was delayed because the third movie is "bigger than the first two combined." The "gigantic" movie needed more time to prep, and they didn't want to rush anything.

Just recently, filming was pushed back to start in spring 2020, with the film getting an official release date of November 2021. The first two films were released in November 2016 and November 2018, respectively.

J.K. Rowling is writing all five movies in this franchise; she is said to currently be re-working the third movie's script to try and make it better than Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald after the relative disappointment of the second movie with fans, critics, and the box office.

As far as we know, Johnny Depp and the rest of the cast will continue in their roles from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. If that changes due to contracts or other issues, you can bet there will be big reactions from every side of the fandom. The third film's title has yet to be revealed, but here's what we do know so far about Fantastic Beasts 3.

No, SNLs Lorne Michaels Didnt Stop Dan Aykroyd From Joining Animal House

No, SNLs Lorne Michaels Didnt Stop Dan Aykroyd From Joining Animal House

There are good comedies, there are great comedies, and then there are legendary comedies. For a specific generation of comedy fanboys and fangirls, John Landis' Animal House is definitely part of that third category. The film has carved out a legacy as one of the most beloved and successful comedies in the history of cinema, but while Landis apparently made recent remarks about the possibility of Ghostbusters star Dan Aykroyd being stopped from from being in the film, Aykroyd has now spoken out to put those ideas to rest. The comedian recently explained,

Great Landis reminiscence about Aretha, but he is flat wrong regarding Lorne not releasing me for Animal House and John knows it. In fact, Lorne put no pressure on me, said I was free to go, but I decided not to leave him short-handed. Also, [Paul] Shaffer voluntarily stayed with Gilda [Radner] and her Broadway show because he had pre-committed to it. John makes Lorne out to be some 'warden' of talent. He is not. He is, however, the greatest impresario and promoter of comedians, actors and musicians in history, and a true empire builder with the interests of talented people at heart. He served Landis very well as a producer on one of John's really great films -- The Three Amigos. Just want to set the record straight, and, again, a great piece.

This all came up in a recent tribute to the late Aretha Franklin, who played a crucial role in John Landis' The Blues Brothers. In his remarks to Deadline, Landis said that Saturday Night Live head honcho Lorne Michaels wouldn't let Dan Aykroyd out of his contract to appear in the film alongside John Belushi. According to Aykroyd, however, this wasn't the case, and instead he personally opted to stay at Saturday Night Live during the production of the film. Of course, Aykroyd and Belushi would go on to share the spotlight in the aforementioned_Blues Brothers - _but Aykroyd says he was not kept from working on the first National Lampoon movie.

Of course, there's an argument to be made that everything turned out for the best in the long run. Animal House has become a classic in the years since its debut (something explored in this year's A Futile and Stupid Gesture), with John Belushi serving as the standout comedic performance for many fans. Meanwhile, Dan Aykroyd's apparent decision to stay with SNL while Belushi was filming the movie helped further establish him as one of the most versatile and reliable members of the early cast as others were leaving to take on the big screen and stage worlds.

So, it would appear that settles that. Make sure to keep it here for more information related to all of the films (comedy genre or otherwise) that are set to debut in the near future, and head over to our comprehensive movie premiere guide if you are on the lookout for further details about all of 2018's most notable release dates.
