The Rock And Jason Statham's Furious Spinoff Landed The Perfect Director

Dwayne Johnson's Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw were adversaries during Furious 7, and their feud continued into The Fate of the Furious, but as that latter movie chugged along, the two found themselves working together to bring down Charlize Theron's Cipher. Rather than keep their dynamic going in another of the main Fast and the Furious movies, Universal gave the green light to a spinoff movie starring Hobbs and Shaw, which is reportedly being called... well, Hobbs and Shaw, and now it's official: Deadpool 2 director David Leitch will helm that spinoff.

It was reported back in early February that David Leitch was in early talks to direct Hobbs and Shaw, and today EW confirmed that Leitch has officially signed on to the movie. David Leitch spent years in Hollywood as a stuntman/stunt coordinator, but he kicked off his directing career with 2014's John Wick, which he co-helmed with Chad Stahelski. Leitch followed up with Atomic Blonde and next month's Deadpool 2, making Hobbs and Shaw his fourth movie on his directorial resume. He will be working off a script written by Chris Morgan, who has penned all of the Fast and the Furious movies since 2006's Tokyo Drift.

The Fast and the Furious franchise has changed quite a bit since it launched in 2001, morphing into movies revolving around street races and heists to its protagonists now often working to save the world. But along with cars, one of the constants in this film series has been action, and with Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham being the stars of Hobbs and Shaw, you need to double down on that particular element. Hiring David Leitch as director is a good step towards ensuring that happens, as he has plenty of experience with stunt-driven action both in front of and behind the camera. While it's reasonable to assume that driving/racing will still factor into this spinoff, given that Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw are two of the best fighters among the main Fast and the Furious characters, one would imagine that means there will be even more throwing down of fisticuffs compared to the main series entries.

No plot details for Hobbs and Shaw have been revealed yet, though as with the previous movies, you can count on the spinoff being packed with craziness. When we last saw these two in The Fate of the Furious, they were celebrating with Dom Toretto and the rest of the crew in having successfully Dom's kid and stopped Cipher's plans. However, Cipher eluded capture, so perhaps the spinoff will see Hobbs and Shaw tracking her down, though I suspect there isn't a shortage of other baddies for them to take on.

Hobbs and Shaw will race into theaters on July 26, 2019, and so far has no competition that opening weekend, though that will change eventually. There is arguably no film franchise quite as big as Star Wars. George Lucas' colorful world has entranced audiences for decades, as each new installment in the epic space opera results in massive box office numbers. And with Disney in charge of Lucasfilm, new and challenging installments have been brought to theaters every single year. The Skywalker Saga started back with A New Hope, and will conclude with J.J. Abrams still untitled Episode IX later this year.

With so many installments in the galaxy far, far away, the rabid fandom has plenty of options regarding which Star Wars movie is their favorite. This includes those intimately involved in the property, like franchise hero Mark Hamill. Hamill recently revealed his favorite Star Wars flick, saying:

It's like pick your favorite child. You like them all for different reasons. I guess I'd probably have to go with Empire [Strikes Back], only because it was so unexpected to have the protagonist be so soundly defeated, losing the hand and the dad Vader, all of it was pretty unexpected. And it was much more cerebral: Yoda is such an important addition to the mythology and I thought it was so clever of George [Lucas], the concept of the Force, so that you could talk about religion and spirituality without making people uncomfortable. So for that alone.

Luke Skywalker has spoken. And he's chosen perhaps the most popular Star Wars movie in the entire franchise. Everyone loves the twist and turns of Empire Strikes Back, and that includes the film's protagonist as well.

Mark Hamill's comments to THR echo the general feelings of the Star Wars fandom. Empire Strikes back may be fifth in the franchise's timeline, but it was actually the second Star Wars movie to ever hit theaters back in 1980. The movie is decidedly darker than its predecessor, and contains some mind blowing twits thanks to Luke's parentage. Plus, it introduces Frank Oz's beloved Jedi Master Yoda on Dagobah.

Empire Strikes Back is such a great movie that it's often considered one of the best sequels in the film world. As such, plenty of filmmakers have compared their sequels with Empire. George Lucas built upon the galaxy he created with A New Hope, and brought all the leading characters to new places, further developing their characters. Add in the twists and dark ending, and there's a recipe that has resonated with cinephiles for decades.

It should be fascinating to see where Luke Skywalker's story ultimately ends with J.J. Abrams' mysterious Episode IX. While Luke seemingly perished in The Last Jedi after using Force Projection, Mark Hamill is set to return in some capacity with the next movie. Smart money says he'll be a Force Ghost, but we'll just have to wait and see how it all shakes up.

Lars Von Triers New Movie Has Animal Mutilation, Here's What PETA Has To Say

Lars von Trier's latest movie, The House that Jack Built, was only recently screened for the first time at the Cannes Film Festival, but it's already attracted notice due to the violent nature of the film, which follows Jack a serial killer. Starring Matt Dillon, the film is set across a dozen years in the life of a serial killer, and as such it features some graphic stuff. Among these graphic sequences are scenes where animals are mutilated, including a duck. PETA is usually up in arms about this sort of sequence, but in the case of The House That Jack Built, the organization isn't too up in arms. Here's PETA's full statement:

Following numerous calls about a scene in Lars von Trier's film The House That Jack Built in which a young child uses a pair of pliers to cut a duckling's leg off, PETA has confirmed that the 'leg' was created using movie magic and silicone parts. While depictions of gratuitous violence like this may leave viewers sickened, it's true that serial killers, like the character in the film, often get their start by first torturing animals, making the scene all the more realistic and disturbing. PETA is also happy to report that the images of tigers in the movie were from stock footage, yet again proving that there's no need to use live wild animals in productions, thanks to the many humane alternatives being embraced by filmmakers today.

Serial killer violence is alarming, no matter what the context, but in the case of The House That Jack Built the movie obviously wasn't striving to actually hurt or misuse animals in any way. In fact, PETA said in a statement (via Bloody Disgusting) that it went out of its way to check into how stuff worked on Lars von Trier's latest film, and found that silicone parts were used during the duck sequence. The movie also reportedly features a second sequence with a tiger, and shots of animals feature prominently in the trailer for the movie.

What really seems to cook PETA's goose is when animals rather than CGI or the aforementioned "movie magic" is used to create scenes featuring animals. The animal-loving organization made headlines in 2017 after footage from A Dog's Purpose came out seemingly showing a German Shepherd being unhappy about filming in rushing water. The movie eventually responded, saying the footage didn't show exactly what it seemed to, and the movie went on to make $196 million worldwide at the box office. PETA has also been unhappy with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, thanks to a monkey vomiting on set. PETA was also unhappy with a scene in Good Time, although that also seems to have been based on a misunderstanding, as well.

In the case of The House That Jack Built, it looks like PETA went a bit further to make sure it had all the facts before releasing a statement, and has decided the film did what it could to lesson the impact of the animal mutilation. Although if you are a lover of all things animals in the first place, the latest from Lars von Trier is likely not going to be a film you should bend over backward to see. In fact, the new trailer gives you a pretty good idea of the gruesome nature of the duck scene, and you can take a look, below. Be forewarned, it's fairly graphic.

The House that Jack Built was originally set up as a TV series, and while a movie has now been made instead, reports indicate that people even walked out of the Cannes Film Festival screening following graphic scenes in this movie. We'll have to wait and see how the movie pans out when it gets an official release. But that duck imagery certainly isn't going to be forgotten anytime soon.
