Why The X-Men Cast Loves Returning To Their Roles Every Few Years

One benefit of joining a superhero franchise is that, so long as you are doing a good job of adapting your comic-book source material, you get to return every few years and continue to develop the character. This can mean exploring new sides of a complicate hero (or villain). And sometimes, as was the case with Sir Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman, you can leap years into the future and play veteran shades of a character you helped create on screen. (And if you havent seen them in Logan yet, what the hell are you waiting for?)

We realized this when sitting down with the Dark Phoenix cast in London recently. Some members of the ensemble have been with this franchise since 2011s X-Men: First Class, which introduced younger versions of Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence). Evan Peters joined the fray in X-Men: Days of Futures Past, while Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan and Alexandra Shipp signed on with X-Men: Apocalypse.

Seeing as how they were getting a chance to evolve their takes on the characters in Dark Phoenix, under the guidance of new director Simon Kinberg, I asked them what they really enjoyed about getting to come back and revisit their roles every couple of years. Michael Fassbender made the connection to the roles his colleagues are getting in top-notch television shows these days, telling CinemaBlend:

I suppose when you watch a lot of the great television thats out there at the moment, and it all for me started with The Sopranos, when you really get to dive in and really get to know these characters and follow them through different stages in their lives and different points in their life, where theyre at, its more of an in-depth study. Thats what this has allowed us to do, over four films, as opposed to just coming in [and] doing a standalone piece.

His co-star, James McAvoy, elaborated on that, noting:

Sometimes, you make a film and its just a standalone film. You put so much of yourself into it, and then its done. You walk away. And theres a virtue in that. Thats great, because you get to just move on with your life and do something different. Sometimes you think back and go, That was like, that was part of me that went into that. So, with Charles you put a lot of yourself into it, but we get to come back a little and we get to reconnect and make something that lasts a little longer than just that three months or the two months where you are making a movie.

The X-Men cast seems to have developed into a professional family over the years and how could they not? They have been collaborating with each other on the same saga for the better part of a decade, contributing to the storylines for Days of Futures Past, First Class, and Apocalypse before reuniting now for Dark Phoenix.

James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender noted that they have seen their own roles in the industry evolve over the same time frame, and it has been exciting seeing how the industry views the X-Men family and the work that they do:

Fassbender: Its also nice to come back and work with the group that we have. Its a fantastic bunch pf people. Really talented, but also generous of spirit. And so yes, its nice to come back. Theres the familiarity there, but theres also something new.McAvoy: Even that, within the family of the filmmakers, as well, watching different evolutions happen there. Watching Simon [Kinberg] step into the directors chair. And watching Sophie [Turner] step up and lead the movie.Fassbender: And watching JenniferMcAvoy: Oh my God, become the biggest movie star in the world! From an 18-year-old she was, like, in a film that had done alright to, like, the biggest movie star, ever. [Laughs]

Sophie Turner is a pretty massive star in her own right, thanks to the part of Sansa Stark on the wildly successful HBO drama Game of Thrones. In that situation, similar to the X-Men, she was able to return to the project every few years and keep evolving the way that the character was portrayed.

But when we spoke to Turner about Jean Grey and the X-Men, she singled out a specific device in this series that helps keep the characters fresh and new, explaining:

Thats the thing that I love so much about these movies is being able to develop a character over years. And the great thing is, as well, between each of these movies [theres] 10 years time. They jump for 10 years. So every time, you have to go back and go, Hmmmm, what have they been up to? What developments have been made in their lives? Thats something that I love, just fleshing out a storyline.

And sometimes, the ability to come back and live inside of a franchise just allows the cast to better understand the larger picture about how these movies are made. Just because you have made one doesnt mean that you are automatically an expert on massive tentpoles. Even Evan Peters, who has put his Quicksilver into several memorable X-Men moments, admitted to CinemaBlend:

I think, also, in terms of, just shooting these films is a whole technical masterpiece that I dont even Im not even smart enough to understand even a little bit of it. So its just kind of amazing to watch them do that and be a part of that so coming back, you sort of have a little bit of a better idea of what youre in for, which allows a little more freedom to be creative and explore different sides of the character.

Thats refreshingly cool to hear that the actors in these massive blockbusters are still learning and growing with each new chapter, developing their roles and refining their approaches to how their comic characters are portrayed on screen.

The Dark Phoenix cast had more to say about this subject, so give our cast interview a glance:

In Dark Phoenix, the X-Men must band together and save one off their own after Jean (Sophie Turner) comes in contact with the alien Phoenix Force, enhancing her powers and putting the mutant telepath in danger. The new movie is being viewed as the culmination of the X-Men saga, so go see how it all ends when Dark Phoenix opens in theaters on Thursday night, June 6.

How Will Disney+ Impact The MCU?

How Will Disney+ Impact The MCU?

The following contains SPOILERS for Avengers: Endgame, but not until the last paragraph.

Avengers: Endgame is here, and with it comes the closing of many stories that began as many as 11 years ago. While we know that Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is on its way, we have very little detail regarding what it will look like, what movies will be part of it or what order we'll see them in.

We actually might know more about the new MCU projects coming to Disney's streaming service, Disney+, than we do about the future of theatrical releases. Three different series projects have been confirmed (four if you include the What If? animated series) and others are being rumored. Marvel Studios clearly has a lot planned for Disney+, as studio head Kevin Feige said during the Disney+ reveal event that the service would be a key part of the future of the MCU:

A post-Endgame MCU will be extremely different and extremely focused on Disney+ tying into our future movies.

Considering how much more we know about the Disney+ than we do about the future of the films, one has to wonder if, at least at first, Disney+ might actually become more important than the theatrical films.

Could the MCU Take A Break On the Big Screen?Shortly after the official unveiling of Disney+, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed what many had been suspecting: that the Star Wars franchise would be taking a "hiatus" from the big screen following the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

This came as little shock because if we were going to get a new Star Wars movie in 2020, as had been previously stated, that movie would need to be in pre-production and on its way to begin shooting very soon.

The good news for Star Wars fans is that they won't be starving for new material. because we know that new Star Wars series are coming to Disney+. The Mandalorian will actually debut before The Rise of Skywalker, and that series will be followed by the Rogue One prequel series with Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk. It's set to begin shooting later this year, which means that right around the time fans might might begin jonesing for Star Wars, a new series will arrive to scratch the itch.

One has to wonder if something similar is planned for the MCU. None of the three announced Marvel series, WandaVision, Falcon and Winter Soldier or the Loki series, have been announced as launch products for this fall. However, one of them could certainly be ready with a few episodes by say, this time next year.

Marvel currently still has a theatrical release date being held for May 1, 2020, but at this point, no movie has been put in that slot, even though it's only a year away. Unless Marvel has been filming something in secret, it's highly unlikely the studio could still hit that date even if something began shooting right now. This will be the first time the MCU hasn't seen an April or May release since 2009.

So what if, instead of releasing a new movie 12 months from now, the MCU dropped one of these announced series on Disney+?

Disney wants everybody and their sister to subscribe to the new service, and that means every Star Wars and Marvel fan the company already has. That's why these new original series exist. Let's just say it's a fairly odd coincidence that Star Wars will be taking a break from the big screen just as these new streaming series are debuting. Lucasfilm may truly be taking time to re-calibrate and find a new direction for the franchise, but the fact that fans looking for more Star Wars will need to subscribe to Disney+ is no coincidence.

Something very similar could be happening with Marvel. If we don't get a new movie in 12 months, but we do get a series, then people who are used to watching a new movie every May will need to drop the Disney+ subscription fee to get the next story in the franchise. It's one thing if Disney+ feels like it's an addition to the existing MCU, but if, instead, it feels like a partial replacement, then the content could feel that much more necessary to fans.

Could We See Fewer MCU Movies?Currently, the MCU only has two dates carved out for new films in 2020, in May and November. However, in 2021 and 2022, they go back up three movies a year, with both years seeing releases in February, May, and November. Since all of the new Disney+ series are being produced by Marvel Studios, all that work is on top of the film schedule. That seems like a lot.

Two films, one in May (or earlier) and one in November, makes a lot of sense. That put the films about six months apart so we get a steady stream of regular content. The various Marvel series could be placed in between these dates, and I wouldn't be surprised if some of these Marvel movie dates fall off the calendar entirely and are replaced by series.

Seeing three MCU movies plus, say, one eight-ten episode series run per year is a lot of content. If the events of the series are going to be important for a future movie, those things have to be released with enough time to give audiences enough time to watch the series before the film comes out. You don't want fans to stay home from opening weekend because they haven't finished their binge yet.

These issues certainly can be overcome, but the more time given between films and series, the easier they will be to deal with and the easier it will be to handle any problems that arise if one project or another gets delayed.

This also creates time for these shows to be released and for Marvel Studios to be able to focus on them and promote them to the fans that want to see them. The series can get the same promotional push that a film would get, which would make sense considering the series are all supposed to be just as important a part of the franchise.

What's certainly clear is that for fans who want to follow the entire MCU going forward, you'll need a subscription to Disney+. Characters from the films will have entire stories on the service that could change them significantly before we ever see them again on the big screen. New characters could be introduced on Disney+ before they ever appear in theaters.

And of course, on top of that, it's likely not a coincidence that all three of the announced Disney+ series involve characters who have seen major changes happen between Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Vision and Loki are both dead within the main MCU timeline. Sam Wilson is no longer simply Falcon, but apparently the new Captain America. How will these facts impact the new series? Clearly, you'll need to watch them to find out.

Into The Spider-Verse 2 Could Include Japanese Spider-Man, On One Condition

Into The Spider-Verse 2 Could Include Japanese Spider-Man, On One Condition

As Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse showed audiences, there's a multiverse filled with all kinds of Spider-heroes. The sky's the limit on who could team up with Miles Morales in the announced sequel, and one of the candidates under consideration is the Japanese Spider-Man from 1970s television. However, Phil Lord, Into the Spider-Verse's producer and co-writer, says that the movie currently playing in theaters will need to cross a specific box office milestone in order for Japanese Spider-Man to appear in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2.

You hear that, folks? If you want one of the weirdest versions of Spider-Man ever created to participate in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2, you'll need to help get its predecessor's box office numbers up stateside. In addition to one of the most critically acclaimed movies of 2018, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has also done well for itself financially, making over $200 million worldwide. However, looking just at the domestic numbers, Into the Spider-Verse is currently sitting at $103.6 million. So it's a little over the halfway point for the goal Phil Lord set on Twitter for fans, but since January is a lighter movie month, maybe more people will check it out after having heard all that positive buzz.

In case you're not familiar with Japanese Spider-Man, this version of the Web-Slinger, real name Takuya Yamashiro, led his own 41-episode TV show (plus a movie) in Japan, which was produced by Toei through a licensing deal with Marvel, from 1978 to 1979. Rather than having a similar origin to Peter Parker, Takuya instead stumbled across a crashed UFO containing Garia, the last warrior from Planet Spider. Before dying, Garia injected Takuya with some of his blood, giving him arachnid-like powers.

Takuya Yamashiro also obtained a bracelet that contained his Spider-Man costume, his web-shooters and the ability to control Garia's ship, the Marveller, which could transform into a giant humanoid robot named Leopardon. With these new abilities and gadgets, Takuya fought the forces of Professor Monster and other beings threatening Earth as Spider-Man, a.k.a. The Emissary from Hell (I doubt he'd have that moniker in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 given its PG rating). Takuya also appeared in the 2014 Spider-Verse comic book event.

Whether or not Japanese Spider-Man shows up in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2, the prospect of seeing this kooky Spidey joining forces with Miles Morales sound incredibly cool, especially if he see him piloting Leopardon. For now, though, the only other character confirmed for the sequel is Spider-Gwen, who will become romantically involved with Miles.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 doesn't have an assigned release date yet, so keep checking with CinemaBlend for that information and other updates. In the meantime, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is still playing in theaters, and be sure to look through our 2019 release schedule to find out what movies there are to look forward to over the coming year.

Takuya Yamashiro was the spider man from the 1970s TV show that aired in Japan and is part of the Marvel universe. He has his own mech and been around much longer than Peni Parker. There's even another one Yu Komori(Earth-70019) that was from a Spider man manga also from the 1970s and is part of the spider verse.

Will Smith Has Seen Aladdins Final Cut, And Hes Hyped

Will Smith Has Seen Aladdins Final Cut, And Hes Hyped

Disney fans rejoice! The studios live-action season soon awaits as Dumbo, Aladdin and The Lion King get ready to hit theaters in the coming spring and summer months. Its a lot of nostalgia to process at once, and each movie has some beautifully animated shoes to fill metaphorically anyway: elephants, genies or lions dont need footwear.

Of all the highly-anticipated performances, Will Smiths Genie might be the one we are most anxiously bracing ourselves for, following Robin Williams iconic, hilarious and touching animated performance as the entity of the lamp. The actor recently took to his Instagram to announce hes seen the upcoming movie and hes blazing with joy. Check out his reaction below:

Are we ready to get on the hype train with Will Smith? The Aladdin star is calling it straight FIRE (emojis and all) and he doesnt seem to mean that in a hot garbage fire kind of way.

A past Aladdin teaser revealing the first look of Will Smiths blue genie caused some concern in fans of the movies CGI. The first image of the character went completely viral and was criticized for being "terrifying." However, the recent first full trailer eased some of this apprehension, as the wish-granting characters CGI looks more complete.

The new trailer also offered a closer glance at the movies music numbers and recreations of famous scenes, such as Aladdins first meeting with the Genie, his makeover into a prince and one romantic magic carpet ride. The latest preview certainly looks promising and has many fans getting the memorable songs back in their heads and ready to see Disneys new take on the popular animated film from the studios renaissance.

We should note the reaction from Will Smith is, of course, a bit of self-advertising on his part, and the actor certainly wants people to get excited and go out to see the movie. If Smith went on social media and said he hated the movie, that would certainly hurt the films chances at gaining positive buzz. However, it does help to hear the star sound excited for the release and the fact that hes seen it means its that much closer to hitting big screens.

Following the in the footsteps of 1992 film, Aladdin follows a street urchin (Mena Massoud), who comes across a magic lamp, thanks to shady deal with Jafar (Marwan Kenzari) and finds a genie inside who helps disguise himself as a prince in order to woo the beautiful Princess Jasmine (Naomi Scott) as a vile power play unfolds between Jafar and the Sultan of Agrabah (Navid Negahban).

The film also stars Alan Tudyk as Iago the parrot and SNLs Nasim Pedrad as a new character named Dalia, and it will include two new songs. Aladdin flies into theaters on May 24.
