Groundhog Day Was Originally Written As A Much Darker Film
Harold Ramis' Groundhog Day is a movie that many people watch annually on February 2nd, but this year has a special significance. The 1993 film is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2018 - and it's certainly a feature worth celebrating and investigating. As die-hards know, it's a feature with a complicated backstory where a lot of changes were made throughout production - and apparently that included a draft with a much darker opening for the story that just dived straight into the narrative. Producer Trevor Albert recently explained,
The opening was darker. It required the audience to sort of go with that [premise]. I loved that. I think it probably would have been a very good movie in the original form, but I don't think it would have been as acceptable.
The dark first act that Trevor Albert is referring to is a version of Groundhog Day that didn't waste any time letting the audience get to know Phil Connors or understand how he arrived in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Instead, according to an interview with Variety, the original draft of the script threw audiences right into the middle of the time loop. Apparently Albert was a big fan of this approach, but it wasn't popular enough to make it to the final draft.
Adding in his thoughts, screenwriter Danny Rubin offered a detail that one might guess could have led to the approach being axed: evidently there was an idea that would have seen Groundhog Day feature an omniscient narrator explaining things to the audience throughout the story. Said Rubin,
There was a voice-over that kind of helped the audience along, so they wouldn't get too disoriented.
Rather than risking audience disorientation or a narrator crutch, Groundhog Day axed both, and may very well be the better movie for it. There is a wonderfully natural way that the story progresses in the film, with Phil Connors first adjusting to and understanding his situation, then exploiting it, and then feeling crushed by it. The earliest draft would certainly have been very different, and may have had some great ideas of its own, but it's hard to argue with the finished product.
As alluded to - and covered in Variety's piece - Groundhog Day was a movie that went through a lot of revisions during its development, mostly because of clashes regarding tone. While director Harold Ramis envisioned the story to be more in line with his other feature efforts like Caddyshack and National Lampoon's Vacation, star Bill Murray had a much greater appreciation for the more philosophical elements of the narrative and pushed for their inclusion. By the end of production, the experience created a deep rift between Murray and Ramis and the two men didn't speak for nearly 20 years. Thankfully, they managed to patch things up before Ramis passed away in 2014.
Ultimately Groundhog Day is truly a brilliant film because of the way in which it balances both of Bill Murray and Harold Ramis' demands. It's not only outrageously funny, but it's also a genius existential exploration that builds off the work of thinkers like Jean-Paul Sartre and Friedrich Nietzsche. In his time as a director, Peyton Reed has gone from helming TV documentaries and episodes of the Back to the Future animated series, to feature films like the teen classic Bring It On. In 2015, Peyton Reed made the jump to directing big budget superhero fare with Ant-Man, and now this weekend's Ant-Man and The Wasp. The latest MCU film is a blast, with great action set pieces that probably weren't easy to shoot. However, the most challenging scene Peyton Reed ever shot isn't in Ant-Man and the Wasp or its predecessor. The most difficult was actually the dinner scene in the 2006 comedy The Break-Up, as he explained:
One of the hardest things I ever had to shoot was in The Break-Up, the dinner table scene. It's a scene in The Break-Up where Jennifer Aniston's family is meeting Vince Vaughn's family for the first time, and it's a lot of characters and a lot of actors, and structurally it's a really long scene at this point in the movie. Servicing all these characters, I think, it took like three days to shoot this one dinner table scene.
This may not be the scene you would expect, but it is certainly a memorable one. The dinner scene is one of the most awkward and funny scenes in The Break-Up, as Vince Vaughn's Gary is squirming in his seat while John Michael Higgins' Richard sings in his face. A great scene to be sure, but its just a dinner scene with very little camera movement, how could this rom-com be more challenging than fight scenes and the Quantum Realm? Just watching the scene it might be hard to see what made it so difficult, but Peyton Reed further explained,
That's a weird thing, because it's not a car chase or something really technically complicated, but by the time you're on day three of a dinner table scene that's comedic, keeping everybody's energy fresh and in the moment --- because they've done the scene over and over, because you have to shoot it for each character --- that was one of the big ones.
There are nine characters sitting around a dinner table in the scene, which lasts for several minutes. As Peyton Reed elaborated to Syfy Wire, the sheer amount of coverage needed for the scene is part of what made it such a challenge. Every character needs to have their moments and be represented, which requires each of them to be shot from like 4 or 5 different angles in what is a fairly long scene. That means moving the cameras and changing lighting to make sure everyone looks their best... which takes a ton of time. Also, one of the primary jobs of a director is to get necessary performances out of the actors. As Peyton Reed recalled, after the third day of filming the same comedic scene, some of that spontaneity and energy gets zapped. So maintaining the sense of urgency and keeping the performances where they need to be is another major challenge.

Watching this after hearing Peyton Reed's explanation, you can begin to see how much this must have taken. There are single shots, two-shots, wide shots and over the shoulders. And with the dinner table setup, even the actors just on the edge of the frame or out of focus are still performing, so there's a lot to cover. This goes to show how even scenes that seem simple and aren't visually impressive can still be extremely difficult to film.

Shazam! 2 Will Likely Follow This Cool Comic Storyline

With all the money its made at the box office so far and the amount of positive reception its earned, its safe to say that Shazam! is another hit for Warner Bros and DC. Its likelier than not that a sequel will move forward, and producer Peter Safran acknowledged that Shazam! 2 will have to come together quickly since the young cast members are quickly growing up.
Fortunately, like many superhero movies before it, Shazam! used its mid/post-credits scene to foreshadow set up whats to come. Assuming a misdirect isnt in the cards, it looks like this upcoming story will be based on the currently-running Shazam comic book by writer Geoff Johns and artist Dale Eaglesham, which hasnt even wrapped up its first story arc yet!
For those who need a refresher on Shazam!s mid-credits scene, Mark Strongs Thaddeus Sivana was seen obsessively scratching ancient runes on the walls of his prison cell, desperately trying to get back to the Rock of Eternity so he can reclaim his last power. Suddenly, a nearby voice tells him that there are other ways to obtain powers, and by the forming alliance, Sivana and these two can conquer the seven realms.
We soon see that this voice doesnt come from a giant, foreboding figure, but from a tiny, yet still unnerving, super intelligent caterpillar named Mister Mind. He was first seen in Shazam! trapped in a glass case when the adolescent Sivana was brought to the Rock of Eternity, but had managed to escape confinement by the time Billy Batson showed up at the wizard Shazams lair.
Although the Shazam! movie drew from all across Shazams comic book history, it was primarily based off the New 52 origin story written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Gary Frank. That story also ended with Mister Mind proposing an alliance to Dr. Sivana, although in this instance, the two of them met when Dr. Sivana tried to break back into the Rock of Eternity following Black Adams defeat, with Mister Mind trapped inside of a glass case. In this case, though, Dr. Sivana was desperate for magical power to save his family, hence why hed entertain working with a sinister caterpillar.
Five years after Shazams New 52 origin story concluded, DC finally debuted an ongoing Shazam comic book series starring these new incarnations of the Shazam family. At the time of this writing, only four issues have been released, with issue #5 coming out on May 8.
However, Shazam!s tease of Sivana and Mister Mind working together, Minds seven realms comment and some weirdness Billy Batson and his adoptive siblings deal with in the Rock of Eternity indicates that Shazam! 2 will be based off the tale that Geoff Johns and Dale Eaglesham are currently delivering on the printed page.
In the current Shazam comic book, Billy and his siblings discover a passage way in the Rock of Eternity that leads to a old fashioned-looking train station providing transportation to other corners of the Magiclands, which is comprised of seven magical realms: the Earthlands (a.k.a. our reality), the Funlands, the Gamelands, the Wildlands, the Monsterlands, the Woznerlands and the Darklands. Thus far, the latter three realms havent been shown yet, but the others are all kinds of weird.
There wasnt a train station to be seen in Shazam!s version of the Rock of Eternity, but it does have its own gateways to other worlds. While Billy and the kids were trying to escape Sivana, they came across a cavern filled with countless doors. One of them led to a room where three crocodile-men (modeled off the kinds of creatures that Shazam/Captain Marvel has battled numerous times in the comics) were playing cards, another door containing a tentacle creature resembling the Demogoron from Stranger Things, and a third door that just tried to suck in everyone.
Aside from visits to the Rock of Eternity, Shazam! only took place on Earth, but these doorways and Mister Mind aspiring for multi-dimensional domination foreshadow that Shazam! 2 will likely have the Shazam family visiting other magical realms. Whether or not these realms will directly resemble the Magiclands from the comics remains to be seen, although the presence of these crocodile men and the prospect of bringing the anthropomorphic tiger Tawky Tawny, a longtime member of the Shazam mythos (who was subtly referenced in Shazam! via a stuffed tiger toy), suggest that the Wildlands could at least appear.
Oh, and its also worth mentioning that Dr. Sivana and Mister Mind are involved in the current Shazam comic book. Thus far the full extent of their machinations hasnt been revealed yet, but theyre definitely up to no good, as Mind instructed Sivana to kill a doctor because the tongue of a medicine man is required for a spell theyre casting.
We also learned how Mind is believed to have originated from the Wildlands and nearly destroyed the Council of Eternity. Perhaps this backstory will be retained for Shazam! 2, especially given that Mind was imprisoned at the Rock of Eternity for an untold period of time.
Assuming that Shazam! 2 is based off of Geoff Johns current Shazam arc, it would be just another way the writers work has influenced the DCEU. Justice League was based off of the opening issues of his New 52 Justice League run, and Aquaman drew from his acclaimed New 52 Aquaman run, as well as incorporated elements of his scrapped "Rise of the Seven Seas" event. Johns had previously helped guide the DCEU as DC Entertainment president, but he stepped down from that role and Chief Creative Officer last year to focus on comic book writing and producing more projects.
Shazam! hasnt even been theaters for a week, so it may be a while before we hear any specific information about whats in store for Shazam! 2. Still, much like how Aquaman set the stage for a Black Manta/Stephen Shin team-up in Aquaman 2, Shazam! showed audiences that Mister Mind is work with Dr. Sivana, and its a good bet that whatever they have planned will require the Shazam gang to venture out into the magical beyond.

Star Wars today is one of the biggest entertainment franchises ever conceived of, but there was a time when nobody had any idea if the first film would work or not. It turns out one of the people who was far from convinced of Star Wars' future was Princess Leia herself Carrie Fisher. In a new book, Fisher's brother Todd reveals that, due to the fact that so much of the movie had to be created in post-production, nobody had any idea what the final cut would actually look like. So we're sitting in the parking lot waiting to go into the screening. Now, this is the first time anybody's seen anything. This is days before it comes out to the theaters. She's smoking, chain-smoking, drinking --- Coca-Cola in one hand, cigarette in the other hand. She just doesn't want to go, and I'm like, 'You know we've got to go in.' I'm sitting there watching the lights go down, you know --- literally, doors are closing. 'We've got to go now.' So I finally get her to put her cigarette out. By this point, there's nowhere to sit except the front row. So we sit in the front row and it starts, and we watch those titles go by and then the battlecruiser flies over and I looked over, and I had her hand, she was squeezing my hand, panicked. I said, 'This is no B movie.'
It's almost unbelievable now that there was ever doubt in Star Wars. It's not like the movie was a cult hit. From day one the movie was a smash. Still, you can imagine that making it would have been something quite different. Without knowing what the final version would look like, without the lightsabers and blaster fire flying around, never mind all the spaceships, it's all a mystery. Even if the actors give it their all, if everything around them looks cheesy then the performances will get lost in the noise. Luckily, as Todd Fisher says in his book My Girls (via Yahoo) it only took the first shot of the movie for him, and likely many others, to realize Star Wars was going to be something else.
And the rest, as they say, is history. Carrie Fisher would go on to become an icon thanks to her role as Princess Leia. She jumped at the chance to reprise that role in 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, though much of that was due to the fact that opportunities for older actresses are few and far between.
