Why Those Star Wars Expanded Universe Characters Were Cut From Solo: A Star Wars Story

Solo: A Star Wars Story contains a lot of easter eggs and references for the serious Star Wars fan, but a pair of expanded universe characters that we expected to see in the film ended up on the cutting room floor. Director Ron Howard revealed during production that Tag and Bink, a pair of comic book characters who have a tendency to find themselves in all the wrong places of the Star Wars universe, were going to appear, but if you went looking for them in the film over the weekend, you were disappointed as they didn't show up. Solo co-writer Jonathan Kasdan, who was actually going to portray one of the pair, reveals that the scene they were in was ultimately deemed unnecessary to the final film, though it was literally the last thing to go.
Early in Solo, Han is on the verge of having his escape from Corellia foiled, which leads him to make a rash decision to join the Imperial Navy in order to get off the planet clean. He makes it clear that he wants to be a pilot, and that he's not looking to be a grunt in the infantry, but the next time we see him, that's exactly what he is. Originally, there was going to be a brief sequence in between these moments that showed what happens to Han. Jonathan Kasdan tells Comicbook.com that the scene wasn't more than about 80 seconds long, but it included Han learning to be a pilot, then disobeying a direct order and being kicked out. At the end of the scene would be some sort of official hearing where Han was dumped from the Academy, and escorting him out of the courtroom would have been none other than Tag and Bink, as portrayed by Kasdan and assistant director Toby Hefferman.
Tag and Bink are the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of the Star Wars universe. Created by Kevin Rubio, the characters appeared in a few limited comic book series that saw the pair of hapless rebels on their own adventures during both the original and prequel trilogies, though that adventure never failed to cross paths with the main events we saw in the movies, meaning Tag and Bink regularly interacted with the characters we all know and love.
Apparently, the brief scene that would have included Tag and Bink was part of Solo: A Star Wars Story from the very first version of the script and was there until the end. Jonathan Kasdan says it was the last thing to come out of the movie, and since we saw the pair on set in costume, it looks like the scene was completely shot. Hopefully, that means there's the possibility it could appear on the future Blu-ray release as a deleted scene.
